hey guys, as I stated in an earlier thread, I have been taking zoloft, and one of the side effects of this is D. I want to ask my doctor to try a different anti depressant, as I have some social anxiety. Any suggestions which ones work well with IBSD? thanks

I was EXTREMELY leery of taking a ssri cause I know they all can have D as a side effect. I alternate but have an abnormal fear/phobia of watery D, am scared that if it starts it wont stop. Anyway I've been seeing an IBS specialist(she trained at UNC) who thought I needed something for my anxiety. I explained to her my fears that once D starts it wont stop (or will take months). She assured me that the type of D one gets as a side effect from the ssri's isnt the same as a TRIGGER for IBS like antibiotics or abdominal surgery (I have had problems with both)and that the D (side effect from ssri)IF it happened would stop if I stopped the medication. To make a long story short (sorry this is so long)she put me on paxil which she says has the LOWEST side effect of D. I did get D a few times at the beginning but its been around 2 months and the side effects (wierd dreams at first, headache and nausea for a week)have resolved and I actually think that the drug is working on my anxiety, at least it appears to be taking the edge off of things to the point where I notice it. I am on 10mg/day which is the lowest dose. Am seeing her again in 2 weeks and will see if she wants to increase the dose.So I would suggest that you try paxil if you can. Again pardon the length of this post.Also check in the antidepressant area of the BB. Hope this helps

I take Elavil and it is helping me tremendously or in combination with some other therapy. Or who knows, maybe I was due a reprieve from the diarrhea. I have picked up 25 pounds though, but I think that will level off now I am not as restricted in my diet.

I also take elavil. I thought it was wierd to take both paxil and elavil but my GI who is an IBS expert says both meds work well together. I take 30 mg elavil at bedtime and 10 mg paxil in the morning.

Just got back from doctor, she wants me to try going off zoloft to see if that cures my bowel problems, since D started around the same time. She also wants me to see a therapist because of my anxiety, panick attacks and D. I'm so depressed

I was crying in her office. I'm not comfortable talking to people about my problems.

Countrygirl-I know what you mean about talking to people about your problems. I'm not comfortable going to new DR's for just that reason. I get all nervous and sweaty. What helps me since it has to be done (go to DR's)is to write things down so I can just sort of read it of the page. After the first visit I'm usually much more comfortable. Also I think that some doctors, especially therapists know how anxiety producing it can be and have interviewing techniques that minimize patients discomfort. Sorry you are feeling so down. Hope this helps

I take effexor and C is a side effect of this particular drug. May want to give it a try. Take care! (it is a SSRI)
