I am new to this forum but have been a silent reader for few months.. I have been suffering badly for the past 10 months after 10 days of clindamycin. My PCP and GI doctor did the c diff testing twice which came back negative. They also tested me for celiac disease which also came back negative. I have developed several food intolerances after the course of clindamycin. I can't have dairy, red meat, high fiber fruits and vegetables. I am just living on rice, chicken, potatoes, bananas, skinless apples, oatmeal, carrots and few other things. My GI specialist thinks I have got ibs after clindamycin. She wants to do colonoscopy in the near future but I am too scared for it now. I fear those strong laxatives. Did anybody else develop ibs after antibiotics? If I stick to my bland almost brat diet, I am okay but I can't live like that my whole life. Did colonoscopy made your ibs worse and how much time did you need to recover from the effect of those laxatives?

You have come to the right place....spend time here an I can pretty much guarantee you will find some relief from something one of us has shared.

Please share with us what worked and did not work for you.

As for the colonoscopy, I had problems for weeks. Raw anus and grumbly guts. Some people find temporary relief after that major prep and evacuation.

Please consider Imodium as part of your therapy.....it has helped me soooooooo much.

@ colt ....so do you take Imodium everyday? And are you able to eat everything while taking Imodium? I keep Imodium for emergencies when I can't control my flare with diet or some natural supplement like wild oil of oregano, psyllium husk, DGL licorice and probiotics.
I use to have very very bad migraines ( with vertigo, nausea and vomiting) for several years. When they started 12 years back, I use to take 2 Tylenol .....after sometime Tylenol stopped working, then I tried Advil , excedrin. After few years all these pain killers stopped working .....then I found a book " heal your headaches" with dietary modifications. It was a life saver for me. Now my migraines are manageable.
I am scared to take Imodium or any medication after all that....because I fear that someday they will also stop working for me just like the pain relievers.
I hope and pray that it continues to work for you forever....

Imodium is fine to take. Haven't heard of too many people having it stop working for them.. so give it a try.

I had the diarrhea all the time before i did the colonoscopy so the stuff they gave me to flush the system wasn't that big of a deal and i didn't even know they did the colonoscopy when i woke up from the sedative. Try immodium 1/2 hour before each meal and see how that works for you. Unless you have costipation also but just for diarrhea is fine. I have had this for 22 years and been using imodium for probably 15. I have recently been trying comvita umf 15 manuka honey and haven't had diarrhea since but it has only been 5 days now so it is a little early but to be honest I do not remember going 5 days without diarrhea ever so I am very happy so far with it!!!! I have been using maybe 1/2-3/4 teaspoon before each meal. This is the best I have felt as long as i can remember. I will let everyone know if it keeps working or if the past 5 days were just a fluke. Good luck to you though I hope you get it figured out because IBS is no fun at all!

You have better English than most native-English speakers do these days.

Yes, I take Immodium every morning. Two if I am going to be away for more than 8 hours and will take as many as 6 or more on a real bad day. There is no point in mentally and physically suffering. Giving in was one of the best things I ever did.

I have not had a "good" day in 4 years. I do not flare. I feel awful every day and the only thing that keeps me sane and able to function is Imodium. I try to take a couple days off of it every week as I do find I build tolerance. On those days I take Pepto - but it is nowhere near as effective.

How and when did your ibs start? Mine started after antibiotics and when I am flaring ( usually when I eat something that bothers my sensitive tummy) usually wild oil of oregano ( which is antimicrobial) helps a little bit. That makes me think if I have any parasite or yeast problem. I am going to ask my doctor for these tests when I go to her next time. I am just waiting and hoping that when fmt becomes more widely available especially the synthetic one, I'll try because mine started after my gut flora got disrupted after the antibiotics.

I assume you are asking me?? My "IBS" started five years ago, out of the blue. Started having diarrhea every morning and at one time could not get out of the house without being up 4 hours prior to work. I tried everything imaginable and nothing worked. Several doctors and finally a really great Gastro who told me to "quit fighting". I fought it so hard those first four years that I became the disease. I was miserable and would not take anything at all. I fought with every ounce of my energy and it consumed me.

Finally one day I decided to stop fighting, load up on whatever gave me relief and try to enjoy life. I would say that Imodium has made my ability to function improve by 100%. I still suffer from the constant feeling of 'having to go', bloating and leakage after BM. But I am able to function well enough now to hide it from people so they do not pity me.

Mine started when i was 12. I really do not remember if it was after antibiotics or food poisoning or just out of the blue. I do remember it would wake me up at night all the time back then and was alot more painful then it is now but always had diarrhea since then.

I started having issues last September after a 12 day treatment of augmentin. I have slightly orange loose stools, the occasional stomach ache, and stomach bloating. I have only had a few normal stool days. I have had a colonoscopy which didn't bother me, but actually made me normal for a couple days. Keep us posted......

@colt ....have you tried eliminating dairy, gluten, red meat etc one by one from your diet.....maybe you just developed some food intolerances
@ ibsnotbgood.... I am sorry you have been suffering for long time.....I am sure they did all kind of diagnostic tests for your problem.
@ wastemgmt.....I hate those broad spectrum antibiotics.....I wish the doctor had told me about the dangers of clindamycin or at least advised me to take some strong probiotics with it. I think they should routinely prescribe some good probiotic supplement like vsl# 3 or "renew life critical colon " with the antibiotics. In India the doctors give probiotics with the antibiotics.

Yes, I did several two-month exclusions. That did not work.
