Hi All. I am new to this website, but i have not been diagnosed with IBS but i believe i have it. I have mentioned it to my doctor but she just dismissed me. I was wondering if you guys could help me... the symptoms list on this site consist with what i have. I have diarrhea, constipation, severe gas (which is very painful). When i get nervous the diarrhea gets worse. I never ate unhealthy but i have changed my diet to add in more vegetables & more exercise - i am not overweight or anything. I just dont wont to get bowel cancer or anything. I know if i continue reading through the website that i will find out more information but any help you an tell me on how to control my system would be great. It affects my life, is there a cure? How have you guys been coping with IBS?

Get a new doctor! Don't let anyone dismiss your symptoms. I have spent almost 20 years with IBS and the first 15 of them were spent being put off by doctors who either didn't believe me or didn't know what to do with me. I now have great doctors and am finally getting some real help. Everyone with IBS copes differently and you just need to find one that works for you. Keep reading what others do and you may just find something. You said you added vegetables to your diet? If you are experiencing gas and stomach pain, be carefull adding fruits and veggies and too much fiber. Do it slowly or it will cause more gas and pain.Again - find a new doctor and get answers.Good luck to you,Mindy

Definitely agree with Mindy - if your doc dismissed you without even investigating your symptoms then that's pants, and you shouldn't accept it. You might well have IBS but you could also have anything from lactose intolerance to celiac disease, and if you have celiac for example then you just stop eating gluten to feel better. So - I would either go back to the doc and be polite but firm about the fact that your symptoms are real and need dealing with (or ask for a referral to a specialist gastro doc) or find a new primary care doc. You deserve better care than this.

Thank you Mindy & Sophie. Your advice has help... i do realise that i have to get a new doctor. This is a great website, it makes you realise how many people suffer the same as me (if not worse). The support and stories really help. People who do not suffer the same type of symptoms do not understand what i'm going through, so thanks everyone.
