Hi just wanted to introduce myself, I have been a sufferer of IBS for the last 18 years but these days I am well in control of it (I think )My Doc has put me on Codiene Phosphate and it seems to work for me - does anyone else use this?
Info on codeine: http://codeinepub.tripod.com/info/codeine.html Liz,Indeed many years ago when I was a kid with the severe intractable diarrheic episodes, my doctors at that time, lacking alternatives, used narcotics to reduce the diarrhea. In those days a preparation called PAREGORIC was my constant companion...until the unavoidable side effects of the use of such narctic analgesics began to take hold, culminating with an episode where I had taken so much to staop an IBS episode that I coukld no longer void (urinate). After 36 hours and a trip to the ER to be catheterized, I was motivated to talk to a gastroenterologist about alternatives. While I do not know wnaythang at all about anything in your case as no information about symptoms, history, differential diagnosis, etc. is posted, I am inferring from what you describe that you may not be under the direct care of a board certified gastroenterologist.I would recommend this, seek a second opinion from one concerning your symptoms, and see that a complete diagnostic workup by one is done. While codeine will indeed help reduce your symptoms, it is "less than the optimal long term solution" to them.I also recommend you read this book if you have been told you have IBS as it will provide you with some info you need to posess and understand.IBS: A DOCTORS PLAN FOR CHRONIC DIGESTIVE TROUBLESBy Gerard Guillory, M.D.; Vanessa Ameen, M.D.; Paul Donovan, M.D.; Jack Martin, Ph.D. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/088...3369143-6824157
OK a little about my history - as I said I have suffered for 18 years. I went to the Docs and he gave me several drugs to try, and I found the codiene was the best one, so I have been taking that for the last 10 years or so. He sent me to see a specialist, and I was admitted to hospital for tests. Nothing was found, so they told me that it was probably IBS and that I should carry on with the codiene. I also suffer panic attacks when I am out and cannot find a 'loo' - this problem was so bad at one point that I never left my home village for nearly 10 years!!! I never took my kids away on holiday - my mum-in-law took them and I stayed at home on my own. My marriage broke down because my husband wanted to get out and about, and I couldn't so he went on his own. But there is a good side to this story - I met a really lovely guy on the internet, and we started talking about my problems - he really wanted to help me. We met up and the end of the story is we are now married, he is so supportive, he also has a VW Camper Van (with a loo on board)
so I am travelling again and have had some wonderful holidays. I have had hypnotherapy for the panics and I find that I can control them quite well now, I just wish I could get rid of the IBS then my life would be perfect.
