hi guys, like many other people here i have had to drastically alter my diet as a result of my ibs. i have had to cut dairy, wheat and as much fat as possible from my diet. I don't eat beef, lamb or pork and have also made sacrifices with foods that include onion, garlic, spices, broccoli, cauliflour, leek, have to avoid caffine, and fruit juices etc etc. i am also eating smaller portions of food to avoid bloating.i have been eating this way for around seven months now, and since then i have lost 18ibs in weight. basically my family are very concerned by this, but i believe its due to the change in my eating habits. i recently visited my doctor who wants me to monitor my weight for the next three weeks.has anyone else experienced these problems and do you feel this could be totally due to food changes? Thanks

thanks for the reply shadowz. im trying to get an idea of how many people are experiencing weight loss, and clearly you are. has anyone with you expressed concern at the dramatic loss?

Well my doctor dont really care , but the times I have been to hospital they have been quite concerned ( last time the emergency doctor told me she could feel some veins in my stomack that she was not suppose to feel , she said it was cause i was so thin she could feel em ) They have done blood test after blood test and xrays at the hospital but it all comes back clear ( doctor wont refer me to specialist cause she dont believe in IBS and if there is no bleeding she say its nothing serious ) I was over weight before thou but now im underweight ( mind you my new short summer skirts looks brilliant on my new slimmer me LOL )

hi just!how are you? it seems our msg "a big thankyou" has come to a stop! shame!!since the ibs started 3 months ago i've lost almost a stone in weight. i wouldnt say it's noticeable but i guess i'm so used to looking in the mirror and seeing one image. i think ive lost weight around my hips and thighs, when i need to those it off my torso and stomach!!i think that cutting out milk, bread, sweets and junk which i ate a lot off has really helped. by increasing the fruit and vegetables i have every day i've got more energy and don't get tired in the afternoons and haven't taken an afternoon nap in ages!i think it's a pretty normal thing to lose weight when you change your diet. starchy foods etc do make you put on weight, and because we've cut out a lot of fatty foods, of course we're going to lose weight. as long as you don't get underweight, then it's natural and fine. i know the weight for my height should be between 9 stone 2 and 10 stone 2. as long as i dont go under 9 stone 2 then i know i'll be fine.

yep I'm here!! i tried to go around to the post office but when i got up the road it started POURING down with rain so i had to run home! luckily i didnt get too far away from the flat!! you're really below 9 stone? i'm 10 stone at the moment which isn't the lightest i have been though. i lost a LOT of weight in the summer of 2001 when i came off the pill and went to the gym all the time. since moving to birmingham my weight has gone up because when i lived with the girls in a student share house i used to comfort eat because i didnt like being there. im only a size 10-12 (UK sizes) though so i wouldnt say i'm fat, but i would like to lose the extra flab i have around my torso (the bit just above the stomach). do you have 3 meals a day? i guess if you're eating properly then it might not be as worrying as if you weren't eating.

yeah im below 9 stone . No i dont have 3 meals a day I only have 2 and i dont eat anything in between either . If i eat 3 times a day I feel really sick ( its cause it dont take much to fill me up ) I do seem to be keeping my weight now thou , so atleast im not losing any more ( untill the next attack that is ) I always loose weight when i have a bad attack and dont seem to be abel to put it back on afterwards. Its still sunny here by the way , just went round asdas to get some fresh pasta ( i found that im abel to eat pasta even thou its durum wheat ) so im stuffing my face with pasta now cause i missed it soooo much.Geee we always seem to take over Justins msgs I bet he is real sick of us

I lost a TON of weight too. It took a long time to gain it back, and then I started losing it again because of various problems. For me, the reasons, I believe, were these: H. Pylori infection, D mostly because of long-term use of Prevacid (because doc mistakenly thought I had acid reflux), possibly malabsorption, then being put on a nutritionist's diet with not-enough-calories.

hahahah!! yeah we are in the habit of taking over his posts with chatter! LOL!!neighbours and doctors are on in a minute and then im going to have to do some revision - well, start some SERIOUSLY! first exam is in 2 and a half weeks time. SCARY seeing as i havent started revising yet. the tutor hasnt even told us what to revise for it. useless!i havent had pasta for ages because last summer i got food posioning from pasta and sauce that i cooked. i havent been able to touch it since because i was violently ill for 11 hours. it was horrendous and scared me really badly. i couldnt even keep down water. im ok with pizza which is strange because i cant have bread. ive got no idea where it all comes from! prehaps its something to do with the starch content? i'm going to have white rice later for tea! what about you?

shadowz & vicky, dont worry about taking over my messages gurls, it's no problem really. i appreciate your feedback on this cuz my family think i might have something more serious than ibs due to the weight loss and blood in stools occasionally.regarding the number meals your eating, i have breakfast, mid morning snack, lunch, dinner, supper/evening snack...so i'm not really cutting down on the amount i'm eating really, just being very careful with what i eat.hope your both doing okay today? *s*

just to let you know vicky i am currently using a pasta made from maize rather than durum wheat and its excellent (doesn't give me any problems)...so if you ever feel like you want to give pasta a try again you should give it a go...trouble is i can't remember the name of it! *Doh*

Justin maybe you should tell your doctor about the bleeding they normally do the tests if there is blood involved (eg. my partner has bleeding and is on a waiting list for colonoscopy and barium enema ) If its fresh blood its normally just hemroids but if the blood is dark and in the stools (black stools) you really do need to get it checked...wow you sure have a lot of meals a day which is actually very healthy and did you know that you can actually loose weight from eating that many times a day ? when u go on a diet they tell u to eat many times a day cause that way your stomach gets used to that there is always food around and then burn more of the food. And Vicky hmmm well Studying is way more important then Neighbours and doctors LOL oh and if im not wrong after doctors there is murder she wrote LOL

hahahaha linda~! ive never watched "murder she wrote". i usually fall asleep after doctors! i havent had a nap after then for ages although im trying not to today because i was up early today - 8:30am!! too early for my liking!thanks for the suggestion just. its the texture of the pasta which makes me feel ill thinking about because i saw too much of it when i was violently sick. i wont go into details, but ive been put off it for life!! although ive had spaghetti since and that was fine. it was because it wasnt the same shape as the stuff i got food poisoning from.
