I stopped eating redmeat when i discovered that it is one of my triggers and so now I need to get more iron in other things, I found that smart start cereal is a 100% daily source of iron, the problem is Im sick of it. I ate it for a while now I haven't in a bit and i can tell, but I can't stomach the stuff anymore. I guess from having it too much.

spinach has good iron content. About 1/2 cup equals about 3 mg of iron. 1/2 cup of raisins, prunes, apricots, figs have the same as spinach.Of course there's also soy products and nuts which have iron in them too. Hope this helps

I am not sure people in Western society need to be concerned with iron consumption anymore. It seems everything in the supermarket is fortified with iron. In fact, too many people take in too much iron/or their body stores it too easily. It's called hemochromatosis (I think). Anyway, don't take an iron supplement or a multivitamin with iron either, unless your doc says you have an iron deficiency. For more info, go to Dr. Andrew Weil's website at www.drweil.com for more info on iron and the foods that contain it.

Gretchen, My doctor once said that extra iron is not needed UNLESS you are anemic. If you eat a fairly blanced diet, you should be okay.

If you need more iron as the other posts caution, there is a wonderful natural product called Floradix from Germany made from herbs and honey. There is a yeast-free liquid version and also tablets if that is easier. Need to be sure it doesn't have triggers for you.Any good health store would have it -- it is excellent for invalid recovery or for building up depleted iron resources. I never eat meat of any kind and use Floradix as an iron supplement and my levels and absorption are excellent. Also, it doesn't cause the constipation common with more coarse iron supplements.Maybe they have web site .. I'll have a look for you.Good luck ... and kind thoughtsDianne

You can try spinach, but I know for me it is one of my trigger foods and I just completely avoid it now (except if I am at this one Sunday brunch buffet near my house, I take one tiny bite to try it because they make it so good, and I am fine.)Try to go to a health food store maybe and ask about special cereals, snacks, breads, etc. You might find a lot of foods you will like so you have variety.

Do you take a multi-vitamin? That will give you some iron. Definitely stay away from iron tablets unless your doctor tells you to take it. I've been on them off and on and they gave me cramps and constipation.
