I had my first colonoscopy in February and was diagnosed with IBS, type d. I've had symptoms for quite a few years, but have a strong family history of colon cancer and crohn's on my mother's side. I am glad to have finally had the tests done....it was a relief. Now comes dealing with these horrible episodes that have attacked me it seems like forever. I was wondering how often do I need to have testing such as a colonoscopy, etc, with a positive family history? I have 3 aunts with colon ca....and one with crohn's.

Hi Chele:I'm not sure, since colon cancer doesn't run in my family. Did your doc have any suggestions? Apparently there is some difference of opinion regarding how often to have a colonoscopy, etc. I recently read a discussion among specialists on this very topic. Read all about it on the Gastrology Association of America's website. The topic is something like IBD and Surveillance for Colon Cancer. It is a report from an international conference of specialists in the field. Interesting!
