I'm sure many of you can relate to this....you have IBS and then on top of that you go and get food poisoning. That's how I started with IBS twenty years ago after getting campylobacter. Well, it looks like I've got it again - please will someone shoot me! After another bad night and passing a lot of blood, I decided to call the Dr. out. He wants me to do a sample but his advice is to just drink and drink. He hasn't prescribed any antibiotics as he feels they can do more harm than good at this stage. This is my body's way of getting rid of it. The blood is because my bowel is probably inflammed.Just hope things settle because I've got a sigmoidoscopy on the 18th June. He said to tell them about this episode as they could interpret the test differently.

Oh Peardrops (what a good name, BTW)!I'm so sorry to hear that you feel so ill! IBS is bad enough without adding food poisoning to your list! I don't think I've ever had a campylobacter infection, but I have had salmonella and an infection from rice (Let that be a lesson to us all... rice that is not cooked properly, or has been allowed to cool too slowly can make you seriously unwell!). The only thing that did it for me when I had food poisoning was to starve myself for 48 hours since my last symptom (such as vomiting or D). The only thing you can have is water, or WEAK black coffee or WEAK black tea. It's the ony thing that seemed to get rid of my food poisoning. You quite literally starve the bacteria out (if the bacteria have no food, they'll die). I'm sure starving like this won't do your IBS much good, but if it was me, I'd want to get rid of the poisoning first and then deal with the IBS.Just a thought.I hope you feel better soon, and good luck with the sigmoidoscopy!

Im so sorry to hear this peardrops . I had campylobacter food poisoning 2 years ago and I was so sick , high fever , diarreah , throwing up . It lasted for round 10 days but the after effects laster for up to 3 months. Please do remember never ever to take imodium when you have food poisoning , I took some and I ended up in hospital , apparently imodium can make your stomach swell up with gas and actually explode in the end. I was in so much pain from the imodium ( only took 2 ) that he sent me to hospital.I do hope u get better soon and yes try and drink as much as u can and if u also have a fever take paracetamol or asprin to lower it. Im not sure staving does much good as my doctor told me that campylobacte takes 3-4 days to set in , 3-4 days at its highest and the 3-4 days to die off again. which comes to 10-12 days in total.All the best

Thank you both for your replies - it's like getting a "Get Well" card! I'm now walking like an old woman!(well maybe I am an old woman). It's too painful to stand up straight. You have both given excellent advice and just confirms what the Dr told me. Never ever take imodium or anything similiar if you have a bug or food poisoning - it will just make it worse.It will be interesting know when I get the results of my sample back just what I've had. I'll just have to be patient and try not to moan too much and hope things return to normal - mind you with IBS are we ever "normal"? I had chicken AND rice on Sunday so it could be either of them that's caused it.....

I woldn't panic about taking imodium. I have never heard of it making your stomach swell and explode. Ive been taking it for years when ive been sick and had no trouble.

But the Immodium keeps the pathogen in the body longer. And the body is forced to fight the effects which will cause even more pain. So the upshot is Immodium interferes with the body saving your life, which is what it is doing with all the purging. Antibiotics should only be used if the infection stays longer than is healthy for your body to deal with. Most people get over it fine without the need to breed super-bugs with unnecessary antibiotic use.

Soundie - that is exactly how the Dr described what happens if you take imodium. It's fine to take for the IBS but not if you have a bug etc., Again you are right about the antibiotics - he said he would only prescribe them if I don't start to improve within a week as they would kill any good bacteria.

Oh man , I had that once about 10 years ago. I had D for month with awful gas and bloating. The only thing goos was I lost about 10 pounds...but quickly gained it back after I got my appetite back.

i was diagnosed with ibs two years ago, had all the tests done, once i knew what it was, thought things would be better. but am having continual bouts with ibs. Mostly diareaha, in the mornings. Gas at night, not extreme but its theres. my doctor told me when i have the diareaha take imodium,, does that sound right? why cant they come up with something that helps this junk, im not hungry at all when it does this, and afraid to eat because i will have diareaha again

, any suggestions?

i went to a dang specialist who is supposed to know about ibs, and he recommended immodium? i never know when i get up in the morning, if i can plan anything or not,, till i see how my stupid stomach is going to react

Peppertree - as long as you haven't got a bug or food poisoning it's usually OK to take imodium. It's just when you have the D because your body is getting rid of the bugs that you are best not taking anything. You will know when you have something other than IBS - you feel so ill and the pain is unbelievable! Also, like I've been having, passing blood from the bowel is not normal with IBS.I'll be back on my usual tablets when this has passed!
