I was diagnosed with IBS about 3 years ago and was tested both by a colonoscopy and by drinking the "white stuff" and then being x-rayed. Both tests were negative. Dr recommended, as expected, exercise, more fiber, monitoring food reactions, less dairy, caffeine and eating smaller/more frequent meals. I have noticed over the past three years that whenever I take an antibiotic for an infection that my symptoms go away. Further, the food diary results in no discernable pattern. While fiber clearly helps more than anthing else, when my bowel movements are normal, I can eat and /or drink just about anything and feel fine. However, I have noticed that whenever I get a fever, cold or flu, the IBS symptoms come back and are hardest to control (no amount of fiber or avoidance of dairy, caffeine, etc..)helps. Is there a connection between IBS and colds/flus and more importantly, what would explain why antibiotics seem to always make the symptoms go away?
