Hey,I have been diagnosed with IBS, My grandad had Crohn's Disease and died of it, he had been tested for it 26 times and untill he became extremely ill with it, they kept saying he had IBS. what do you think?I've had Blood tests, barium, camera. Couldn't find anything, is there any other way of testing for it.. would you say they're pretty acurate? What is your opinion? Thanks

Blood tests and the colonoscopy are the main ones, as well a barium for the small intestine.Do you have any blood in the stool, or weight loss that isn't just from eating fewer calories? Joint or skin problems?Sometimes they will do the camera pill to look at the small intestine, but usually if your blood work is clean (no signs of inflammation) there isn't likely to be visible inflammation in the gut. Usually be they time you can see it, your blood work is off.Now if you have periods with a lot worse symptoms make sure you get tested at that time, not when you are feeling pretty good.Even with a family history IBS is very common and Crohns is fairly rare, so it is likely it is just IBS if all your tests are normal.

Hi Bluetac,Do you know what kind of bloodtests you had? I've had a ton of blood tests, which were fine, except for the one with the IBD "markers" which I guess isn't a sure thing as far as them being able to say you 100% do or don't have IBD, but people that do have it will get certain markers from levels being a little off.Since I've had so many bloodtests I'm wondering what they're even looking for in all of those that kept coming back as ok.

Blue if it were me I would seek another opinion and get a colonoscopy with biposies and specifically rule out Crohns.

DittoTry to find a GI that has a specialty with Crohns and Colitis. They will be more helpful then just any general GI.

I have Chrones, i was diagnosed when i was a junior in highschool. They thought i had it for years and just never knew. I got very sick my last two years of highschool, and college. I was down to 140 pounds and im 6 feet tall. I almost needed a blood transfusion i was so anemic. They at first thought i had acid reflux, then just ibs, then colitus, then they figured it was chrones. I felt that dr's just did trial and error trying to figure out what the hell was going on. It got soo frustrating. I was on 25 pills a day at one point just to get by and i kept getting more sick from them. Still to this day i feel like ive never been to a DR that really knows what do. I have decided to go the more natural approach than being on a million meds. Im in a good place right now, peak weight, and feeling ok 85% of the time. I have self diagnosed myself with IBS because i have about 15 bowel movements a day, and never have 2 days the same. I dont know if the chrones as done so much damage that i get ibs from all of that, but i know my body. Its frustrating to not have a spot on diagnosis.

Hating IBS, I'm so sorry to hear you went through all of that. You might want to consider finding another GI doctor who's more specialized in Inflammatory Bowel Disease. It's possible that you could have IBS on top of the Crohn's - Unfortunately, the two aren't mutually exclusive, but it's also possible you could be having a Crohn's flare as well. Wish you best of luck.

Thanks so much. ITs been a tough journey. I did change gastro's but im a total hippie when it comes meds. He wasnts taking meds like candy... im a believer of the natural approach. So im trying florastor right now, and fish oil. Been doing ok with both. Im in a uphill climb right now, but it takes 1 issues to send me into a flare up again. Its so hard!
