Hi I am new to the website and have suffered from IBS -D for the past 7 years.. it has got worse over the years and have been on Loperamide for the past 4 years, but even these tablets dont stop the Diaorrhea. I can take three at once yet still go to the loo a further 2 - 4 times that day, all my GP says is well thats IBS for you.Like many others it has got to the stage where every journey has to be planned by toilet routes and it is totally ruining any social life I have is there anyone who is suffering the same but may have some advice on how to help, I have been told that acupuncture for stress could help as related to this illness..Thanks

sikasika,Other than the loperamide, you don't say what other treatments you have tried. There are many to choose from and you can read for hours here on the board to find something to try.Give each one an honest try and try only one at a time so you will know if it works or not.A few of these options are....food and symptom journal, calcium carbonate, CBT, flavanoids, probiotics, fiber supplements, hypno therapy, peppermint, l-glutamine and many more. You will probably find in the end it will be a combo of treatments.Good luck in your search.Thai

Not sure if I have an answer for you, but in all honesty I dont find loperamide as useful now as what I found it when I first went on it a year ago! For me, food doesnt really play that much of a role in my IBS-D because I may eat something and I go to the loo in excess, but the next time I eat the same thing I wont have any side effects at all! I think the thing that triggers me the most is the fear of not having access to a toilet if I need to go. I'm currently about to start trying probiotic drinks to see if I notice ay changes, I'm reluctant to try the calcium supplements as I fear the possible side effects on my future health of taking too much calcium than you safely should

The amount of calcium people take here is within the guidelines of how much calcium every person needs every day. You need a minimum of 1000 mgs a day (most people do not get that from their diet and there are health consequences from chronic lack of calcium as well) and the recommended maximum is 2000 mgs a day.

Hi, sorry your having problems.I used to have lots of problems and found to change every few days between Gatro Stop and Lofenoxal. I take 2 then take another if I have to run to the loo and another so most I have taken is 5 on a bad day.I have tried so much to try and help me Accupunture worked for a little while and Calcium did not Endep at night never helped, Hypnotherapy never helped or meditation, Colfac nothing.I am now seeing a Chinese Herb Doctor and it has helped she told me not to eat salad and some vegetables and no cheese. If I have to go out in the mornings as that is my toime that I will get a attack I get up 2 hours before as with moving around that is when the Colon starts to move.So best to try anything people say and something might help you.Good Luck.

Over the period of time I have had IBS-D I have been on three different forms of tablets loperamide seem to be the best but still not great, have recently started taking a pro biotic drink daily and this has worked, but just wondered if any other ideas!! I seem to read a lot that calcium tablets are good any experiences with this idea??

As you probably have seen, there are some 65 pages of posts on this in the Linda's Calcium Thread, pinned to the top of this Board. I am pretty sure that if you PM Linda Nape she will help you find something appropriate and advise with the dosage. And were that to not help, there are still lots of products and approaches you can try.Mark

I have heard Good Pro's and Bad Con's about Accupuncture over the years.I have heard doctor's say that it is the best method available for pain relief , and I have heard others say > Your just tricking your mind into beliving it works.Over the last 52 years I have tried every med available for my Tumor disease. The stuff never worked , even at the maxed out dose. And the side effects it caused were past and beyond horrific and sent me to the Er many times. (5).One pain clinic said he could see there was nothing more that could be done for me , as surgery was not an option due to the severity of my disease. And the dangerous locations of the tumors (Spinal Cord and Brain)He said I have One last option you could try > Accupucture.I told him to hold on before he went any further, I said No matter where they'd stick an Accu needle they have to shove it thru huge tumors .He withdrew his suggestion and said Yes that is true and it would indeed cause me more pain in the process as they have to go thru the tumors to get at the base where those Accu needles needed to be.So Accupuncture is Not for everyone. If it was the ultimate cure , we wouldn't need pills and all the doctor we have to go to.It's just an alternative.Which is defenitaly ok to seek out and try.

Have you ever tried any prescription medications like Lomotil or Lotronex? I am present on Lotronex and it has helped me get back my life back. If I was going anywhere, I had to be up hours before to let my bowels have their way before I could leave the house, otherwise I'd have to take Lomotil and sometimes then deal with C the following day. Lotronex has been a stabilizer for me. I still have a few problems but nothing like it was. I hope you find some relief. I know what that's like! Sandy

One suggestion I can give is to ask your doctor if there is a way to determine whether or not you have a bacterial overgrowth in your small intestine. I had diarrhea/abnormal stool for about 2 years before finally seeing a GI dr who immediately gave me a hydrogen breath test (positive result). I went on rifaximin antiobotic and within 2 days my diarrhea was gone. My symptoms have started to come back since then, but it's possible that a bacterial overgrowth could be the cause (and anti-diarrheals may do nothing to help this). I've also read that enteric coated peppermint will aid in reducing diarrhea.

Hi, I fixed my IBS-D with a combination of food diary (alcohol+coffee), identification of stress, CBT, exercise, hypnotherapy and tricyclic antidepressants the ADs where the main one because i had become obsessed with fixing myself and my stress was in fact cuasing most of the problem but also triggerslook up GI stimulants on the forum/web they are the usual bad guysi have tried peppermint, calcium, acupuncture, massage, chinese herbal, imodium, antispasmodics, 5htp, samE, betablockers, vitamins, saint johns wort with no success but some people have tried these and been successful. reading a lot of people stories regarding toilet mapping etc, a lot of it is self induced stress and panic/anxiety which causes a loop of reinforcing symptoms and behaviour, both a food item and stress may be contributing, even small background work stress also be scientifice try one at a timeuse imodium and antispasmodis when you have to but they can interfere with your method of finding the causei have also posted a full write up on the forum regarding my trials and tribulationsibs is not one thing, it may be a combination of things, it may be stress, it may be food, u have to use a process to identify it, talk to your doctor to work out the best series of tests for you and dont let them brush you off ibs is cureable its just a process because the symptoms of ibs are so non specific. All the bestbartek
