5 years ago I had a colonoscopy and had a benign polyp removed. Last fall I had another colonoscopy and had a very small benign polyp removed but showed an otherwise healthy colon. This February(about 5 months after my last colonoscopy) I was under the most tremendous stress of my lifeand experienced 2 days of diarrhea(twice a day) followed by a day of constipation with one hard stool with white mucous, followed byanother week of once a day diarhea with mucous. For the past 4 months Ive experience different stools(usually smaller, looser but not diarhea) have had diarhea about once a week and have had noticeably more gassyness. I must point out that I dont feel pain but seem to feel the gas moving through me, feel gas near my left rib,and feel my intestines contracting(both lower and mid abdomen) but not really pain.I rarely have a normal stool, usually dark now(they were light for 2 weeks after my first episode)but sometime they initially float before sinking(gas?) and are just different.Does this sound like IBS?Does everyone have pain? Can IBS cause stools to be different every day than they were before you had IBS(rarely a normal stool)Is it strange that these symptoms appeared just months after a colonoscopy that showed anormal colon?Any replies greatly appreciated.

Hi Pepsi, Well it certainly sounds like IBS to me, considering I have been diagnosed with IBS and experience all those symptoms and more. The change in stool is normal for this disorder from all I have read. At the onset of my ibs, that was the first noticeable difference. Suddenly, after years of normal bowel movements, I started having nothing but miniature soft stool and occasional watery diarrhea. I also have gurgling, bloating and discomfort. I wouldn"t call it pain, although I have a very high threshhold for pain so maybe for some it would be considered as such. I wouldn"t worry about it too much since you"ve had the colonoscopy, it sure sounds like IBS. I had that done and also had some small benign polyps removed. As far as the gas goes, considering you feel it under your rib cage like I often do,(mine thumps sometimes) it is most likely just trapped gas according to my GI. Hope this helps, Good Luck

Well it sounds as if it could be IBS to me! I think everyone may have some differences with it. Some people have it worse then others. And that includes pain. I get HORRIBLE pain. Sometimes it makes me want to faint it's so bad. I think most of us have some sort of pain though. Consitpation and diarrehea are both painful to expeirence usually. Just how much pain though depends on each person. ------------------Jennifer

Thanks for your replies. I have noticed a couple of trigger foods(pizza, sugary deserts) and I must say that I have started paying close attention to what I eat and have started eating more healthily in general. I'm eating more fiber which I try to get from raisin bran and legumes. This has helped recently and I just started(today!!) with l-glutamine. Let's see how it works. Ive also been working out more forstress relief. Thanks again, this board is great.
