I would like to try Acidophilus to help alleviate my gas symptoms, and wondered if the listed dose of two tablets per day of 500mg each was correct. Anyone know if there is a 'best' time of day to take them?Lisa

Most of the acidophilus I've ever taken is dosed in # of microbes, but usually whatever they put on the label is the correct dosing for that brand.K.------------------I have no financial, academic, or any other stake in any commercial product mentioned by me.My story and what worked for me in greatly easing my IBS: http://www.ibsgroup.org/ubb/Forum17/HTML/000015.html

Some of those brands may be better. The brands that seem to work for people here pretty reliably are Culturelle, Probiotica and PB8. I take probiotica and it is not refrigerated. None of the Acidophili brands I took before refrigerated or not worked.Acidophilus will not effect any gas that is trapped, but should reduce the amount of gas you produce. For trapped gas try exercise. Waist twisting exercies like the kind you do in Yoga or Taijiquan [T'ai Chi] or walking can help make the gas move.If the gas seems to be trapped by spasms taking an antispasmodic may help.If you have a sensation of being really bloated after eating that may or may not be gas. In either case Digestive Enzymes supplements can ease the post-eating bloat. I use Enzyme Digestant from GNC.K.------------------I have no financial, academic, or any other stake in any commercial product mentioned by me.My story and what worked for me in greatly easing my IBS: http://www.ibsgroup.org/ubb/Forum17/HTML/000015.html

Lisa, most say it doesn't matter when you take them, but I do remember reading that stomach acid is at its lowest something like 30 minutes after a meal. So one probiotic suggested that might be a good time to take it.

Hi Lisa, Acidophilus with Bifidus 6 Billion active cells really has helped me out alot, I have been on them in combination with Modulan (Canada), I take 1 Modulan and 1 Acidophilus about 15 mins.- 1/2 hour prior to eating, before each meal 3x/day.. my specialist said take them before eating, then when the food hits, it has already started to work, versus putting all the food in and then the medication...so far so good. I have only had 2 episodes(D) in the 5 months I have been on Acidophilus, definelty store the bottle in the fridge after opening as these are active good bacteria cultures. I also found my bouts of severe gas almost to the point of passing out sometimes have calmed down.Hope this helps, after all it can't hurt to try, I know I'm open to new things if it will help with my IBS. Any other suggestions on stuff you have tried please let me know. Thanks + Good Luck.

I have been using Culturelle for over a year. It is a special strain of friendly bacteria. It is made to work where it belongs in the large intestines. It can withstand stomach acid which can kill the friendly bacteria. It can be taken at any time with or without meals and is Not kept in the fridge since there is no need for this. It may control certain kinds of D (intestines with an overgrowth of harmful bacteria) and for me personally has controlled intestinal gas. I take one capsule a day and two if I start to get D. I can't find it in stores, it's there someplace, so I order it by phone. You can find out about it at: http://www.culturelle.com/index.html Whatever you use, be sure it can withstand stomach acid. If it can't, do not use it with food. Also know whether it needs refrigeration or not. Reading labels is important for obtaining information.------------------Take care, Forever Vikee
