I have had IBS for a decade now, and heartburn for many years prior to that, since my first pregnancy. However, lately the heartburn has increased and I have been experiencing a burning sensation (usually later in the day) in the pit of my stomach. I have been consulting with my GI specialists office and they will likely do some tests, but I am wondering if I might be suffering from an ulcer. Does anyone out there have similar symptoms? Additionally, I have had the usual D and urgency. I was wondering if perhaps it is just my IBS that has taken a different form or if I should be more concerned than usual? I have noticed that I seem to have one or two sessions daily of watery stools, which is more frequent than previously. Does the course of IBS change over time? Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

In my case indigestion was my first problem, including some kind of "Oh my God, I must have an ulcer!" gastric attack. Later, the diarrhea developed. In the last couple of years of that the indigestion became much, much worse until it lasted all day long as a burning across my abdomen. Finally, I began refluxing at night. As far as I can tell, some level of inflammation was at the root of it, no doubt caused by years of chain smoking. (This continued on for another 5 years after I quit smoking.) In 1998 I began taking a flavonoid supplement to control my cholesterol deposits and within 2 months, the indigestion stopped, after about a year the D stopped, and I never refluxed again. I have not had more than a passing case of normal heartburn or indigestion in almost 12 years.Mark
