it has crossed my mind how docs can tell what the abdominal pain is down to. i have had constant abdominal pain for 5 months and have tender areas where when the doc presses feels very uncomfortable and quite painful. how can the doc tell whether the pain is down to ibs or and inflamed small intestine?

Vicky, some inflammation they can see with common testing proceedures and the inflammation is visiable like in the IBD conditions and some in IBS with very powerful microscopic testing and its not visable and embbeded in the digestive system. In IBS some people have microscopic inflammation from a prevous enteric infection and this is being studied as we speak. It should be noted IBS is not like the inflammmation in inflammatory bowel dieseases.
