Often the symptoms of lactose intolerance look very much like IBS and vice versa. And, unfortunately, some people have both. You can be tested for lactose intolerance and most doctors would insist on that test before they diagnose you with IBS.Hope that helps.

IBS is often mistaken for lactose intolerance. Studies have determined that people with LI are actually not bothered by consuming it in ordinary dietary amounts and so the symptoms they get are really from IBS.So

The test actually is for lactose malabsorption and doesn�t report on the intolerance (the symptoms), although one would an expect a malabsorber to get the symptoms since the dose of lactose is so high.

Doctors generally do not do this. Most of them don't have the equipment to do formal testing for malabsorption.
