I have been IBS free since August of last year. I had had several test, including colonscopy, and endoscopy and visits with a specialist. Then something sidelined me. It was called Myasthenia Gravis, an autoimmune disease..Its not so bad, but was was amazing was the medicine they put me on to treat that, immediately cleared up my IBS. Before I could not eat at restaurants without difficulty or family gatherings, or even my own home with out sometimes major problems. I spoke with my nuerologists today and he says that IBS could be an auto immune disorder which is the meds I am on for the Myasthenia Gravis, and maybe that is what has cleared up my stomach. All I can say is , I had it one day and it was gone the next...I can eat anything I want and however much I want and NEVER a problem. The name of my medicines are cyclosporine and mestinon. He believes it is the mestinon. I will speak to my stomach dr about this, but if you get a chance mention it to your doctor and see what he says...I have had no symptoms for 9 months after years of living with this. good luck...

Myasthenia Gravis (stands for Grave muscle weakness) is an auto immune disorder that attacks the muscles. It usually affects your eyes giving you double vision, swallowing problems, and overall weakness. I only had the double vision and ocassionally the swallowing problem. Some patients are severe. I went along for several months being misdiagnosed, which is very common. A nuerologist finally diagnosed me, and started me on those meds. My thymus was enlarged, (which is by your heart and used with your immune system as an infant and child and slowly shrinks as an adult when you don't need it) and so I had to have it removed. Which unfortunately means breaking your breatbone open and removing it. Some patients whose thymus is enlarged develop tumors Anyway, the surgery did not have anything to do with my stomach getting better. I believe I started getting better right after I started on the meds. I have read recently where IBS is an auto immune disease which would make sense that my meds were helping. My IBS symptoms were... bloating, gas, stomach cramps, and explosive diahrea after eating. Restaurants and family gatherings were a major problem. let me know if you have any other quesitons....

I am contacting my Stomach dr. on Monday and getting his email address..he asked me to email him with any changes, and I think after 9 months of symptom free living, it is time. I have no side effects from Mestinon. Sometimes it can give you a stomach ache,,and when I read that I thought,haha..I can live with that, but nothing happened..They started me on low dose and then worked its way up..The nuerologist doesn't think the cyclosprorine is the cause for my improvement of my stomach symptoms. So Im going to bounce this off the other dr in an email on Monday, he is a very well respected dr. and I hope he gets excited about this...
