I have been diagnosed with IBS and get horrendous lower left quadrant intestinal pains in the same spot. They get so bad that I have been hospitalized. All the tests that Ive had do not show a thing, they have looked at my insides every which way to Sunday. Anyone else ever get this? It sometimes goes on for hours and hurts so bad you want to die. I dont understand how they cant find anything wrong in there. The doctor says it must be spasms, involutary muscular contractions. It feels like someone's got vise grips squeezing your guts. Anyone got any suggestions how to stop them? Im slowly going out of what little mind I have left.

Hi! Yes I get the same thing. Left sided pain and it is so bad for hours I want to die to escape the agony. I am D type IBS and it doesnt seem to relate to bms. My doctor blames it on spasms, and adhesions from a hysterectomy. Hope something can help you out. I find using a heatpad helps me most of the ti me so when I go to bed I just cozy up with it. You might try that. Wish I could be of more help.

Ann and Dorothea, I get the same pain on my right side and sometimes the left side. My heating pad is my best buddy! I also take ibuprofen and an anti-spasmodic. I blame a lot of the pain on gas but the longest that it has ever hurt was six and one half days. I told my husband that if my side was hurting the next morning that I was going to see the dr.(I hate going to the dr.). But the next day I was fine. Mysterious IBS.

Ann, if you are the same one who posted in reply to " poop scoop", what I was saying was in reply to Get A Grip ( a former post someone made) It wasnt me but I have had these similiar problems. So sorry you have so much blood and hope someone will find the reasons and help you. I am sorry if my post was confusing to you.

I used to get bad left sided pain, along with alternating c & d and bloating. I made dietary changes, eliminating most carbohydrates ang gassy vegetables like cabbage, capsicum etc. which decreased the bloating. Then, occasionally I would get the most incredible right sided pain. It was so different to the pain I was used to I saw my Dr (I thought I had appendicitis it was so painful!), who reassured me about how IBS symptoms can change. I found an antispasmodic helpful, along with occasional simple painkillers. Heat packs are good. I rarely get the pains these days - I drink heaps of peppermint tea which has mild anti-spasmodic properties, and chamomile too. Good luck!

I have had left sided pains, right sided pains, had a barium enema, showed spasms, doc gave me antispasmotic called Levbid, also drink ginger tea and peppermint teas, hardly have the pains anymore. Also drink citrucel, and eat oatmeals and bran, and lots of water to keep things moving. Hope they find something that helps you!------------------God Bless

I also get these baaad left sided pains. They're terrible at the moment because i have my period too (and can't distinguish between the two different types of pain right now!!). I take (enteric coated I think it's called, it's easier on your tummy, but always take ibuprofen or aspirin with plenty of food) ibuprofen 400mg which helps for about 3 hours. Hot water bottle too as someone else has already mentioned. I take coproxamol (script only) when it is very bad, which dulls the pain but does not relieve it. Take care, susan

I'm finally glad to see people with the left sided (colon) pain, not glad in the sense that you are having paid, but everyone I've been reading about has the right sided pain, which I've never had. I've been told that the pain I'm having is from the spasm in my colon along with adhesions from my pregnancy, that was "supposedly" confirmed with my last colonoscopy, however since then I have an abdominal CT scan and I'm having another colonoscopy tomorrow, but pain is worsening. Yes, I too, have it so bad that I pass out, I get hot and cold and i loose the feeling in my right arm and fingers, I describe it as being very close if not worse than labor pains. I'm on an antispasmodic, which has been working great until recently, that's the reason for the tests. I have alternating C&D, so I'm one of those that if I eat too much fiber I pay, not enought I pay...very very frustrating. I have some pain episodes that can last up to 2 to 2 1/2 hours before I get an bowel relief, then it usually starts out as C and end with about 5 bm's ending with D. Anyone like that? So the next day I get up I don't know how to eat, fiber or no fiber any suggestions???Cheryl

To Jean G: Let me try to recall, I had 2 colonoscopies, 2 sigmoidoscopies, 2 barium enemas, CT Scans with gastrografin, upper endoscopy and Barium xrays, stool samples and blood tests. The only effective relief came from demerol. During one barium enema they had to stop a bit because you could see my intestine spasming like crazy, I looked over at the screen and saw it myself, and felt it too. I froze stiff in one position, afraid to move thanks to the pain. Theyre telling me to roll on my side and Im crying and telling them I cant. what an experience.
