I started taking a 250 mg supplement of magnesium and have had a slight improvement in spasms and volume of bowel movements.I read a site that suggests a mag deficiency is hard to identify with simple blood tests and that smooth muscles can become impaired resulting in constipation. The site is written by Dr. Schachter and can be found at:http://www.healthy.net/library/articles/sc.../magnesim.n.htmKarl

Hi I started taking magnesium about a year ago when I was having a lot of fluttering and skipped heartbeats. They weren't serious but were scary and a huge pain in the butt! Since I've been taking 250 mg. a day, I rarely have PVC anymore. Good stuff.Carlene
I'm not so sure about all the info there. Many of the supposed symptoms he claims for magnesium deficiency like insomnia, anxiety, hyperactivity and restlessness with constant movement, panic attacks, agoraphobia, and premenstrual irritability sound as if he is trying to come up with a quick cause and cure for these symptoms.

I think this article sounds very promising. Can you get magneseum suppliments from the chemists shelves with the other vitamins and minerals or is it prescription only?
Some of what is on that page ain't true. How is that promising?

Funnytummy,Check with your local drug store on what's available. As we all know, controlling IBS is a trial and error exercise. If I can get better control with simple magnesium as opposed to prescription constipating, addicting, and sedating drugs so be it!!!Karl

Hi I have had good results with a combination calcium magnesium supplement. It's 1000 mg cal and 500 mag.For the gals out there with pms, I've been on it over a month and I was the mellowest I've ever been.I know this is anecdotal evidence, but it's working for me.

OOoo help with pms too? That sounds great! I have found some mag and am taking that and caltrate, haven't quite worked out how much of each to take yet, but I'm feeling very hopeful!flux - do you enjoy being so cynical? You're very good at it!
Karl, I am so glad you posted this on magnesium. I read the article and it is the first time I have seen anything related to a couple of sypmtoms I have, I am very sensitive to light and noise, I twitch and have IBS. I am going now to buy magnesium. Thanks, KAJ
