Does Metabolife affect IBS. I was taking it for a week when suddenly last Saturday I cam down with severe pain. With the help of the IBS meds prescribed by my Dr. the pain subsided today. Should I give up trying to use the Metabolife or any diet pills?

I dont know if there is a conncection, but right before I got ibs, I had been taking metabolife for 3 months, I was never a very regular person as far as bowel movements go, and I noticed when i was taking the metabolife that I started having bowel movements regularly, then it just slowly started getting a little too easy for me to have a bowel movement and then bam the ibs hit. I dont take them any more, but I had always wondered if there could have been a connection there.

Given it's interactions with caffiene it makes some sense to me it could cause diarrhea. Caffiene will do it on its own, but if you combined it with the ephedra it could do a double whammy. Here is the warning from metabolifes own web page:I got one word for this: YIKES!WARNING: NOT FOR USE BY PERSONS UNDER AGE 18. DO NOT USE IF PREGNANT OR NURSING. CONSULT A PHYSICIAN OR LICENSED QUALIFIED HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL (PHYSICIAN) BEFORE PRODUCT USE IF YOU HAVE, OR HAVE A FAMILY HISTORY OF, HEART OR THYROID DISEASE, DIABETES, HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, RECURRENT HEADACHES, DEPRESSION, ANY PSYCHIATRIC CONDITION, GLAUCOMA, DIFFICULTY URINATING, ENLARGED PROSTATE, SEIZURE DISORDER, IF YOU ARE USING A MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITOR (MAOI) OR ANY OTHER DIETARY SUPPLEMENT, PRESCRIPTION DRUG OR OVER-THE-COUNTER DRUG CONTAINING EPHEDRINE, PSEUDOEPHEDRINE OR PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE (INGREDIENTS FOUND IN CERTAIN ALLERGY, ASTHMA, COUGH/COLD, AND WEIGHT CONTROL PRODUCTS), OR IF YOU INTEND ON TAKING TO REDUCE WEIGHT. THE MAXIMUM RECOMMENDED SERVING OF EPHEDRINE FOR A HEALTHY ADULT IS 100 MG IN A 24 HOUR PERIOD FOR NOT MORE THAN 12 WEEKS. EXCEEDING RECOMMENDED SERVING MAY CAUSE SERIOUS ADVERSE HEALTH EFFECTS INCLUDING HEART ATTACK AND STROKE. DISCONTINUE USE AND CALL A PHYSICIAN IMMEDIATELY IF YOU EXPERIENCE RAPID HEARTBEAT, DIZZINESS, SEVERE HEADACHE, SHORTNESS OF BREATH, OR OTHER SIMILAR SYMPTOMS. INDIVIDUALS WHO CONSUME CAFFEINE WITH THIS PRODUCT MAY EXPERIENCE SERIOUS ADVERSE HEALTH EFFECTS. KEEP OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN.

The Metabolife did not cause any changes in bowel movement. I had severe pain in the colon. I could barely walk. If my bladder got full or had any pressure in that area at all the pain was worse. I couldn't even touch my abdomen, it was so painful. I thought I was in labor, again.[This message has been edited by kathy1949 (edited 01-11-2001).]

Some of the links also mentiong cramps. I'd give up on diet pills, most of the OTC either contain ephedra (which is dangerous) caffiene (which can be bad for IBSers) or PPA (which could give you a stroke and just got recalled by the FDA).Many of the prescription ones are not only stimulants, but addictive as well.Any sort of thing that revs up the nerves is likely to be BAD for IBS (a condition of screwed up GI nerves).I'll give you the old Mottus family secret diet for long term weight loss:Eat everything you always ate. Just eat 2/3rds of the portion size.Unfortunately any short term plan like pills tends to cause you to rebound your weight very quickly when you stop them. Often people bounce up to a higher weight than they were at when they started. Long term lifestyle changes are your best bet to taking it off and keeping it off. Also do NOT plan on losing more than a pound or two a week. Rapid weight loss is often a preciptator for gall bladder disease. The gall bladder attack is painful and removing it can cause diarrhea problems.K.[This message has been edited by kmottus (edited 01-11-2001).]
