hi--I went to dr mathias today, u know, the one who says "Millions of people do not have ibs, but insulin sensitivity." I was told to take a tbsp of mineral, and 2 tbsps a flaxseed oil. I was told to avoid bread, sugar, muffins and eat vegies, whole grains etc.. um onay, I cant eat vegies b/c they tear me up and cant eat whole grains breads b/c of the same thing. I was also told to take xanax .25 mg 3x a day and penactin elixer every day. these are to stop colon spasms etc.. this diet is ridiculos! I'd starve on this thing. I eat sourdough bread, metmucil, etc every day while mathias is telling me to eat carbs like bread once a week! what the hell is this! Im pissed. I think he has some theory and is trying to fit me into it. what do u think???? He also did an electrogastrogram and said my gut is moving irregularly. this is confusing and frustrating. Also-- many of u have requested to know about mathias journal article on this.---PostGraduate Medicine, Neuromuscular Diseases of the GI Tract, Vol 97, No.3, Mar. 1995, pp.95-108. Also--Fertility and Sterility, Vol 70, No.1, July 1998, pp.81-88.thanksart

Hey, Art, saw your post. Wow, this guy sounds like he could be a no fun a drag. While he has some good ideas he seems to be a little watered down in the interpretation. Maybe he just has bad relating skills. You know, like someone who can't get a story straight?I suppose doctors can be prone to their confusions too.Well, I'm of the good whole grain variety of food eater.I eat bread. tons of it. I don't gain weight and it does not make my IBS-C worse. I eat mega whole grains though. I even have a friend who makes me a special bread with fruit and grains and it's unleavened and when I eat it with extra good yogurt I have good BM's.So everyone is different and you have to find which foods are the best for your constitution.I think that's the biggest and most difficult part of getting the body system in better working order.so just keep a food diary. Write everything down and do the process of elimination and pretty soon you will know what's right for you.I think most people with IBS custom tailor their food and suppliments any way. That's because IBS is a highly personal condition. As for xanax, well, that is some good medicine for the gut.Yeh, I know it's the big boo boo on the addiction list, but for me, it's a gut saver.I don't care about the addiction worries because I go into tachycardia and I've already had emergency surgery for an impaction when my gut stopped working so for me, if xanax can help keep me having a better less traumatic day more often then, heck, it's xanax I shall take.I also get hyoscyamine but some days the spasm is so bad it's not enough. My spasms get so bad that there are times I still need to Use the ER for my pain.So again, the Xanax helps to keep me off the I.V.s. Again one has to weigh the perils with the benefits with respect to our personal condition. So if you're mad at the Doctor and feel railroaded, get someone new. Some doctors are a reald drag. Some doctors are very personable but a little slow.Go with what feels comfortable. You won't have a good communication and trust in your doctor if you don't believe his/her medical philosophy.Kamie

HI PRO: _____________________________________"I cant eat vegies b/c they tear me up and cant eat whole grains breads b/c of the same thing." _____________________________________This typifies what is worng with most dietary protocols for people diagnised with IBS: they are not patient specific, so the outcomes vary wildly. The proper way, like any modality where individual susceptibility is a fact, is to make the protcool patient specific. ______________________________"I was also told to take xanax .25 mg 3x a day" ______________________________This will reduce your anxiety and at least make you feel like feeling bad is not such a big deal
you may cope better and may experience some reduction in symptomology as a consequence. _____________________________"I think he has some theory and is trying to fit me into it. what do u think????" _____________________________I think you should read these 2 books ASAP and then you can answer your own question based on the work of persons with specific expertise in this area.IBS: A DOCTORS PLAN FOR CHRONIC DIGESTIVE TROUBLESBy Gerard Guillory, M.D.; Vanessa Ameen, M.D.; Paul Donovan, M.D.; Jack Martin, Ph.D. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-h...9085785-1742301 "FOOD ALLERGIES AND FOOD INTOLERANCE: THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO THEIR IDENTIFICTION AND TREATMENT", Professor Jonathan Brostoff , M.D..
