i have along history of stomach/intestinal probs, and it has been suggested to me by doctors that i may have IBS. i have had wonderful results in the past with acupuncture, but am too broke to do that now, and i dont even have health insurance at the moment, so i cant go to a regualr doc either, unless it is really serious, of course. my stomach probs include reflux, heartburn,, upper gastric pain, then there is also lower abdominal pain, like gas , bloating, constipation. rarely diahhreah. i cant even spell it.the weirdest thing is when i was pregnant and even thorough a year and a half of breastfeeding, my symptoms were almost nonexistant, and very easy to control. if i eat small freaquent meals and drink enough water, that usually helps alot. but its all coming back now, and hard to control.including a really gross thing...when i have a BM, it feels like it doesnt all come out and i then also feel like i have to wipe forever, and i just never feel clean there. this will go on for like a week or so, and then pass. i feel like there is stool still in my body that wont come out, yet when i pass stool it is not hard. its almost like it is stuck to the walls of my colon or something????i am in the middle of one of these weeks, and tonight i had so much pain on my lower right side i was getting worried about appendicitis, but i cant tell you how many times in my life i have worried about that with pain like that. it was enough pain to have me barely able to walk, and my hands were sweating. i think its "just gas" but i am so sick of this. (and i did talk to a nurse tonight, btw) if anyone knows what this could be i appreciate any info. i am 28 , and have had these issues since i was 18 or so. except, mysterioulsy while pregnant and breastfeeding, in the last 2 years.

Hi and sorry to see you back.If I remember correctly, the right side pain was my gall bladder passing a stone. Perhaps that is a part of the problem.Mark

hi! The symptons that you said "i am in the middle of one of these weeks, and tonight i had so much pain on my lower right side i was getting worried about appendicitis, but i cant tell you how many times in my life i have worried about that with pain like that. it was enough pain to have me barely able to walk, and my hands were sweating. i think its "just gas" but i am so sick of this." Is exactly why I came on here tonite. This is the first time I have ever been in here and I came in here to find out exactly what you want to know. I had one of these "attacks" last Saturday and I tried to explain the pain and no one really understand because i know no one with the same problem. I was awaken at around midnight with this slight abdominal discomfort and as soon as i sat up BANG! I hurt so bad I could barely stand up or walk and I began to sweat. I have had these before and this wasn't the worst i have had. I usually call these my "has to be worse than labor pains" attacks. I'm 18 with no children and one night actually it happened around 8pm and I was watching labor and delivery on TLC and here are these ladies screaming in pain and there i am curled up on my bed bawling my eyes out wanting to scream, telling them they're going through nothing. Although my mom assures me labor pain is the worst pain in the world, but at the time I thought I was gonna die. Anyways after these "attacks" i don't feel well for a couple days. I wake up feeling all tight in my abdominal area as though I had been trying to be sick all night and I feel as though I have been thrown into a brick wall. And I did not feel like eating for a while. Chocolate is my "tigger" for IBS but I hadn't had chocolate for over a month. I would like to know what causes these and how can i never have another one ever again?

Obviously I am no doctor, but I do also get the pains either on my right or left side and I believe it is gas. It usually is relieved with a bm. I try to control this with a high fiber, low fat diet. Fiber keeps things moving and I tend to feel better then. Also, hormones can definitely affect IBS. A lot of times I get diarrhea with my period. I also have a friend who does not have IBS, but has that problem. So maybe that is the reason you didn't have symptoms while pregnant and breastfeeding. I don't know if any of this has been of help. Hang in there.

Just from my personal knowledge file, I believe the worst pain comes from the rings of muscle that push food through the bowel spasming and clenching the ring tighter and tighter. Hence the horrible pain...nothing can pass through this ultra tight ring so you can get a blockage until the ring relaxes again. My gastroenterologist suggests this is why metamucil-like products can help as the undigestable fibre stops the ring or rings contracting too far.Your large intestine goes up (or down) both sides of your abdomen so you may have a particulalrly reactive intestinal muscle there on the right there. But I dunno, I am only speculating based on what my specialist tells me about the severe pain associated with IBS. It could also be a grumbling appendicitis or gall stones too.

hey michelle18, i have had this kind of pain AND i have had a baby, but labor is even WORSE pain than that! it really is. hard to imagine , but when i was pregnant i thought i would have no problem dealing with labor pains since i have been in alot of abdominal pain so often....nope...its really really really worse. not to minimise what you go through, these intestial pains can be incredibly severe also.if your mom can afford to take you , you might try acupuncture. it helped me, but it isnt a cure, more like maintanace, but i felt alot better then.just my suggestion, i know everyone is differnt.
