Hi all,

I've had IBS for about 15 years. Bouts of chronic constipation, followed by bouts of diarrhea. I've seen dozens of doctors, specialists, tried all the diets: gluten free, diary free, low fermentation, fodmap - you name it, nothing works. I'm at the point in my life now where almost everything I eat gives me a stomach ache (which I have throughout the day) and I'm in the bathroom every morning for a minimum 30 minutes (usually an hour).

Last year I went to Cedars to work with Pimentel's people. The first day the Dr gave me a spot breath test (I had been fasting for 16 hours) and I had 15 times the hydrogen levels of someone who had just ate! He immediately diagnosed me with SIBO. Over the year, I've tried all the antibiotics and specialty supplements, but they either didn't work, or made me feel much worse. I did another spot breath test after a year of being a patient, and my hydrogen levels were the same. The Dr told me I was one of the more severe cases he's worked with.

He said I had one last option: the Vivonex diet. If this didn't work, he said he was "out of ideas".

I've been doing it for 12 days now - first off, the taste is awful and I'm starving / lightheaded / woozy all the time. The Crystal light packets make it slightly more palatable, but not much. If anyone's curious for tips on how to get by on this, I'm happy to answer.

Through my course on the Vivonex, I have non-stop gurgling, stomach cramps, and constant diarrhea. It was on and off the first week, but this second week it's several times a day. Today I was in the bathroom for well over an hour. I'm bummed because the Dr told me most patients don't even have a BM. Am I experiencing die-off or what?

Additionally, I've been burping like crazy, and feel like I do during my worst times with IBS / SIBO.

The Dr said I should come in after two weeks for another breath test, and if I didn't pass, I'd have to do the diet for another week. That's sad enough, but if I don't pass at all -- he's out of ideas. I was kind of hoping this would be a magical cure, or at least I wouldn't feel so terrible through this process. Does anyone have any experience or words of encouragement? I'm getting depressed because I feel like I'll never get better!

Thanks.

Have you tried Herbal supplements? Go buy some Allicin and Oil of Oregano. Try wiping the bacterial with some Herbals. The side effects will be easier to deal with. You'll have to take them longer but I think its the right move for you. I took Rifaximin and it caused severe urgency, multiple bouts of diarrhea, and just total misery. I wanted to kill myself. Ive been somewhat stable but definitely have days with a lot of gurgling, some flatulence, and a bit of bloating. Im interested to see how your breath test turns out after taking the Vivonex. Let me know..
