Hi,I stumbled on this site, and hope someone may be able to help me. My problem is that since August last year, i started getting sharp pains in my right side, coupled with a dull pain just under my chest bone. I also felt uncomfortable pain in my lower back. It was pretty debilitating, and i had to take time off work. At first my GP thought it might be my gall bladder, but basic blood tests and an ultrasound scan brought up normal results. I waited five months for an appointment with a Gastro consultant at my local hospital. By that time, the pain had all but disappeared in my side, but i still sometimes get twinges. The supposed gastro expert was unable to draw blood from me (although who knows why he was attempting to take blood when my GP had already ordered a full set of bloodwork be sent to him). After faffing around, and feeling my stomach, he sat me down and said he didn't want to investigate further, as it would give me discomfort. He then said he thought it was a "bit of irritable bowel" and that it was a "b*****d to treat". That's it. No further info. Nothing about changing my eating habits, and no info on what IBS actually was. I'm writing a letter of complaint to the chief exec of the health trust, as no stool samples were taken, and the manner of the "expert" was so dismissive that i actually felt embarrassed that this person thought he was doing his job properly. I'm worried now that if the symptoms come back, i'll have to wait months and months before anything is done again. Perhaps i should go private?Anyway, sorry this is so long, but thanks for letting me get it off my chest. I'm just so frustrated that our health care specialists are so keen to dismiss our ailments with relative ease.

hello there and welcome on board
I can only to well relate to what you have been thru with the doctors , im in the uk as well and they seem to just diagnose everyone with IBS over here ( course they cant be bothered to do tests ) If the pain comes back you will have one hell of a job getting your GP to send you back to the hospital (they have diagnosed you with IBS and will use this as an excuse from now on ) if you complain about pains they will say oh its just your IBS !!! You could go private but its very expensive (especially if they want to put you thru all the tests) but if you can afford it , then that would be the best solution....Im glad that you are better now thou and I hope that the pain never comes back

Don't give up. I went through 7 or 8 GI specialists before I found one who could help me. I've been going through tests since I was 16 years old (I'm now 50). Until recently there was not much that doctors could do to help IBS sufferers. Now there are two drugs on the market: Zelnorm (for those with constipation) and Lonotrex (for those with diahrrea). In the meantime, I have to say this BB has given me more help than all of the doctors combined. Spend the time to go through the FAQs and read through posts. Ask questions. You'll find some things that work and that help you. Keep making those doctor appointments. Eventually you'll find the right doctor to help you and you shouldn't have to pay privately for it. Welcome to the BB!
