I was dx with IBS last Wednesday. I went into the doctor's office due to a burning pain under my sterum and the diarrhea I was having that morning. I suddenly got chills that became uncontrollable. I mentioned to the doctor that I had a headache, back ache and my stomach hurt really bad and I felt light headed. He DX'd me with IBS. 2 blood tests were drawn and I still don't know what the results are. Later that day spiked a fever of 103.5 and the next day it broke. For a week I have had nothing but an upset stomach (choking down Slippery Elm for the pains) The doctor prescribed: Protonix and Hyoscyamine 0.375mg. I take the Protonix once a day and the Hyoscyamine x2 a day. I personally don't see a difference on these meds. The slippery Elm (GNC or Akins Health Food Stores) is helping me more I believe. I want to feel normal again with out the cramps and urge to go to the bathroom everytime I turn around. Has anyone heard of fevers with IBS? How long does this diarrhea thing last? Does anyone take Hyoscyamine for IBS and if so does it help you? The doctor wants me back in his office next week and he did say the meds would help but not a lot. Sorry for all the rambling, I'm just really confused here.Sheri

how long have your symptoms been present? because it sounds as if you've only been feeling this way for a short period of time. if this is true, your fever would indicate to me that what you have is a good old stomach virus and not ibs. one of my co-workers was out sick this last week with one. did your doctor say why he/she thought you had ibs?carrie

Got to admit it dont sound like IBS to me , and I dont know how a doctor can diagnose it as IBS if you have only had it for a few weeks , sounds like a normal stomach upset ...Go back and see your doctor if it continues

Actually, I didn't mention in my 1st post that I have had this problem all my life, I just finally got a DX for the problem because I refused to see a doctor in the past for fear I would get probed, yeah I know stupid. I agree, I think what I had last week was some kind of bug. I am still having the stomach upset and I did put a call into the doctors office to get my blood test results and find out if having diarrhea for a week is normal. Is it normal??? I am going on day 2 of eating normal solid foods and food still isn't agreeing with me. I used to have a stomach of steel but in the past 12 years or so I get an upset tummy on whatever I eat. Hi Sheri:
quote:I want to feel normal again with out the cramps and urge to go to the bathroom everytime I turn around.
We all do. You will find many things here to try to alleviate symptoms. Some work well. Some do not.
quote: Has anyone heard of fevers with IBS?
There are many people here more knowledgeable than me but I don't believe 'fever' is an IBS symptom. Many people find that a fever or other infection can trigger a bad bout of IBS symptoms.
quote:Does anyone take Hyoscyamine for IBS and if so does it help you?
I do. Five times a day. It doesn't help much but I'll take what I can get. It's a smooth muscle relaxant that may help a little with intestinal spasms.

He was probably right but there are many things you can try from lifestyle changes to nutrtional changes that may help. Every little bit helps as long as you are careful and find the right ones. Meds can help, too.

No need to apologize. We all came here confused. I believe you will find a lot of good information that will help with that problem, too.Good luck.

Hi Baychan,This sounds more like microscopic colitis to me than IBS. Did your GI take biopsies of your colon? The chills, D and fever are clues that you're dealing with more than just IBS. Also the fact that the slippery elm is helpful since this too is recommended for IBD. You might try taking pepto-bismal 8 per day for 8 weeks. If this works than you've probably got a form of microscopic colitis.LouLou
