Hello, I wanted to get in touch as I am feeling very low and to see if anyone else experiences embarrassingly loud gas noises. I find myself behaving really strangely at work trying to make enough noise to drown it out. Everyday I get the same, sometimes a little in the morning but mostly after lunch. I dont have a particularly bad farting problem, its like my intestines balloon up just to make some awful noises (all kinds, groaning, squeaking, moaning, vibrating) it sits there moving up and down - so uncomfortable.

The embarrassment it causes me has started giving me panic attacks, Im constantly on edge, anticipating it start - and the more anxious I get the worse the noises are

I also suffer from fissures and I think I have a hemorrhoid, which at various times as caused excruciating pain. Sometimes I feel as if I need to go but cant really when I get to the toilet, its soft but wont come out and is very difficult to wipe without pain.

Ive scared myself with suicidal thoughts, just cant keep doing this everyday - and to be told a thousand times by my GP that there isnt anything they can do. Heartbreaking.

Hi Hifiber,

Yes I have tried various diets - most effective for me is the FODMAP diet, but it doesnt stop the symptoms - just lessens the severity. I drink a lot of water... Infact I am always up to the toilet, if its not the IBS!

Work is awful, I have developed some ways of getting around it but there are always days that I cant hide and thats usually when i get the panic - which of course makes my tummy go even more crazy!

I just went to see a consultant at the hospital I work at who is a gastro specialist - I am really hoping they discover something! I hate the term IBS - Why not just say, Ive know idea whats causing this. Its the same in my eyes.

@Vegas8 You are certainly not alone. That is essentially how my IBS symptoms (not diagnosed) started. Then came the bowel symptoms. I work at an office and get in during the morning and that's when all the noises start. Gurgling, rumbling, gas-like noises. It terrifies me. I am on edge. Even have a little fan at my desk to try and drown out the noises. It literally gives me horrific anxiety. I think it's an anxiety-related thing, honestly.

Have you been treated for anxiety and depression? It's my next step and I am hoping for improvement.

Lol, I have a fan too! ppl must think im crazy putting the fan on when its not even that warm!

My GP gave me some Beta blockers to help with the panic attacks... they have been useful when my panic attacks got very bad.

I have been researching anxiety and IBS a lot online and have come across some relation between serotonin levels and IBS - If your interested, just google Serotonin and IBS and theres lots to read. I realised a lot of the symptoms and signs being mentioned applied heavily to me - so after quite a bit of reading I found a natural supplement called 5htp which rebuilds serotonin levels... I have been taking it for 3 days - Ive already noticed a subtle change (possibly placebo), however, I have had no anxiety or noises in my tummy for the last 2 days at work (first time in a very long time). After lunch, when its at its worst, I have felt a little gas but the normal panic that strikes my gut hasnt happened... I just have gone to loo relieved the bit of gas and then ive been fine. Its early days, so I will let you know how I get on with it over the next few weeks but I am already feeling more positive.

Not sure if anyone is interested on an update on 5HTP .... but here is a week update. I have had 1 day last week where i got terrible gas after eating too many rice cakes at work which was a bit awkward, but generally I have had no unmanageable symptoms since supplementing with 5HTP. I have notice my mind is much calmer, no dark thoughts - and my stomach isnt make any strange noises other than normal digestive sounds that everyone has.

A few negative comments regarding 5HTP - I noticed I felt like Id had a very strong coffee, no anxiety but I had a weird racing feeling. This seems to have calmed down over the last few days. I also woke up at 5am the first few mornings, wide awake! But now I am just waking up feeling a lot more alert than normal, which I suppose is a positive... but I love a good lie in bed :/

The immediate positive effect really outweighs any of those negative points though. I have a months supply and then I intend on visiting my GP to discuss continuing using them to make sure its safe.

I really cant believe how much of an effect my anxiety / serotonin levels has had on my IBS!

Yep, I go through this every single day at school. It's gotten to the point where I've actually had suicidal thoughts. It's just an awful thing to go through every day. It's also like I know right when a noise is about to happen. I get SO anxious, my face gets red, I start moving my chair or desk to make noise, and I start to shake. Sometimes it gets so bad that I actually stand up in the middle of class and go get a tissue or to throw a random piece of paper away. I probably look so pathetic.

Hi Vegas8 ,

Just joined IBSgroup few hours back ,I am from India.

You are not alone ,I too suffer from chronic gas ,bloating,IBS like symptoms.

Especially i feel the same at work if i try to fart or pass gas. One thing I do is to keep drinking lots of water ,then go to rest room and release the fart/gas .If someone is around I go to the WC else use the regular one.

I get panicy when I am in a closed door meeting and feel like passing gas. At home its a lot more easier as we have some privacy around this.

usually I get depressed too ,however knowing we are not the only ones having this helps ,forums like IBS group are a great place to share our thoughts and possible cure.

Hope this helps.

I have the same exact problem, my stomach constantly making noises. It's embarrassing for me to be in quiet places because that's all you can hear. The noises are due to IBS, and they seem to be worse when I'm anxious or stressed. Whenever I have an anxiety attack my stomach goes crazy. So, try not to worry and stress as much as it might be making the problem worse. Also, the noise is probably from gas which is an IBS problem, but it might also be from your diet. Try to stay away from carbonated drinks, gum, and excess amounts of foods that cause gas (like broccoli, beans, lentils, etc) because I also noticed as soon as I became a vegetarian this issue also got worse. Just know that you're not alone

I get nervous that people can hear the noises my stomach makes. After asking my coworker who sits next to me numerous times, she guarantees me that she cannot hear it. I just try to tell myself that only I can hear it when I start to get worried.

I do suffer from the same problem :( Bloating, irritation in the stomach, inconsistant bowel movements, gurgling at night (maybe its more noticable because its quiet) and symptoms of GERD.

I need to find a cure because its driving me nuts!!!

Vegas8, just wondering. Did you find any side effects to the antidepressant? I read that it kills libido and reduces sex drive, did you feel any of this?

you are not alone!! one of the reasons I dropped out of college my senior year was because my belly would be SO loud in the silent lecture hall. I would have anxiety/ panic attacks. I would eat my food one bite at a time over the course of several hours because I thought I could stave it off. and the anxiety only tightens up your gut even more. I believe that you have hemmoroids-- especially if wiping is so painful. sorry, I really resonated with your post, it's like looking in a text mirror. going on a low carb, sugar free diet helped immensely with the grumbling, but all my other symptoms are worse. I can only offer solidarity at this point, sadly.
