non thickening soluble fibers

I have a question. HOw do soluble fibers like benefiber and fiberrific help IBS D if they don't "gel" and thicken like other fibers? I though soluble fibers helped because they were supposed to "gel up" and help absorb and bind stuff as it moves through you. BUt if the fibers dont' thicken and dont' have that "gelling" ability anymore how do they help?I"ve always wondered this and i started using a non thickening soluble fiber recently so i'd like to know how it works.

It is more about how much water they absorb, not how they bind up the solids in the stool, from what I understand.K.
