Well where do I start, havent posted on this site for a long time, have suffered IBS for 8 years or so, am on the waiting list for a colonoscopy and I only just found out yesterday that the specialist wants me to have a Barium Enema first to check for polyps, hence the ouch! and I've heard that you poop concrete for a week afterwards, greaaaaaat!! my rare will never be the same..lol and to top it off my hubby this morning says to me "arent you glad handy cams are alot smaller than they used to be, he says ouch as I thump him" so how bad is it really? I have read that the prep for this is the same as having a colonoscopy? is this true... well I'll leave it there happy reading..

Wonder why the barium to check for polyps. If they see them they will have to remove them. Why not do a colonoscopy, since you are going through the prep anyhoo, and then they'd be able to remove any seen.I would hate to do both of these tests because they found polyps in the barium enema.ugh.I'd ask.

At the moment I feel as though I'm banging my head against a brick wall! Last week I had a sigmoidoscopy and this is to be followed by a barium enema. I'm just getting over (I hope) c-diff so I was dreading the prep. It was fine....picolax was the name of it. I begged them to do a colonoscopy but they wouldn't. It just makes no sense to me to do two tests, two preps, and as kselibrary says, if they find a polyp on the barium enema they can't remove them there and then. On my sigmoid they found a small polyp!! What's to say there aren't more further along the colon - crazy!! I'm still waiting to hear when the barium enema is going to be so I can't see the specialist until it's done. I'm seeing my family doctor this Friday to get the results of the biopsies and polyp....that's if she has the results!!! Yes, the barium enema does sort of set afterwards but you should expel most of it after the test. First one I had my eyes almost popped out of my head when I saw how much was going to be put into me.....it's not too bad really.

Going in for a barium enema on july 1st , prep is as follows > 2 small 1 and 1/2 oz's of Fleet Physpho soda. Several hours apart from one another. I hope I don't get a raw rump from all this , as my skin cracks and burns there when I get the runs.I spelled that "P" name incorrect

Thanks for all your reply's surely dosent sound like its going to be fun at all.. all I can underatnd of it all is that theyre gonna do the Barium before the colonoscopy to check for polps and if they find any they will be removed when they do the colonoscopy, I am not looking forward to any of them, I'm hoping they find nothing, then I will feel like it was all a waste of time.. will keep you informed as to how it all goes, I'm unsure when I have to have it but knowing my doc it wont be too far away, thanks guys...

Called the hospital and they told me they do NOT take Polys out with a Barium Enema , that test is just to look for polyps and other abnormalities in the colon. You need a Colonscopy to remove the Polyps.I think the BE tomorrow will be a waste of my time , they should be doing a colonscopy instead !

Glenda - that's just how I am feeling, I cannot see the reason for a barium enema either, especially as I've had a polyp removed on the sigmoid. I go to my doctors Friday to get the results. At least I feel I can talk to her. I don't have any faith in the hospital doctor I saw. I understood I was seing a consultant but as he isn't a Mr he certainly isn't a consultant. I have a feeling he is a doctor in general medicine. He was so abrupt. When I see him after my barium enema, and should he have the same attitude, I can see myself letting fly! He even made the comment about usually not prescribing medications as patients tend not to take them! Well maybe if they gave us something that worked we would continue to take them....
