I have been having symptoms lately that seem to point to IBS, especially severe constipation, which I have suffered with for as far back as I can remember (I am 22). Now, I have abdominal pain that wont go away. I just started a new job and I dont have insurance, so seeing a doctor has to wait. What kind of over the counter medicine is available for constipation besides laxitives? I feel so bloated! Help!By the way, this is my first time on this website!

You may want to pay in full for your first visit to a gastroenterologist while waiting for your insurance to become effective. That's what I did. To me, the benefit of seeing a GI specialist outweighed the cost of the office visit. However, it's up to you to decide when and if you need to see a doctor. For OTC help with constipation, I recommend taking a dose of Citrucel every morning. Also, be sure you are drinking 6-8 glasses of water and clear liquids everyday. The water and fiber will help bulk up your stools and make them easier to pass. It may take a few weeks for your body to get used to the extra fiber, but it really can be helpful in combatting chronic constipation.Good luck!

hi. putting aside any other underlying causes which only a medical exam would show, try looking at your diet and lifestyle. treating the cause and not the symptoms is one way to go; using food as your medecine and natural, non chemical solutions such as certain supplements (magnesium, viteC, etc). lots of cooked leafy greens, olive oil and flax oil, water and fruits in your diet may help. sometimes fiber supplements work, sometimes, as in my case, they aggravate the situation. it's pretty much trial and error. exercise, breathing, relaxation techniques, pooping the same time every day, going to bed earlier and rising earlier all help. me, at least. good luck, g-
Ground flaxseed works well. You buy it at a healthfood store and grind it up in a blender or coffee grinder. I mix 1-2 tablespoons with a glass of orange juice. Others sprinkle it on their food. Do it 2-3 times for a day, then once a day after that.
