Paxil vs. Remeron

I have been taking 20 mg Paxil for about a year now for the anxiety and panic attacks caused by IBS D. I also take 100 mg Dicetel. Paxil has worked really well for that, but, unfortunately the sexual side effects don't want to go away. I've done some research on Remeron, which has only been available in Canada for a month or so, and it looks like it might work better for me. Does it work for anxiety as well as depression? I have been depressed in the past, but am not right now. I have a dr. appt. on Thursday, and am thinking of asking him about switching to Remeron. I have cut the Paxil dosage in half in the past with no adverste effects, but it was not sufficient to keep the anxiety away, so I don't expect I'll have a big problem weening off the Paxil. Any one have experience with both of these drugs?Jennifer

Hi Jennifer. I've been taking Remeron (its generic name is 'mirtazapine' in case your doctor needs that name) for nearly 2 years now. No 'sexual' side effects. It was prescribed for depression, but I have found it to be helpful for anxiety. It has also helped the IBS D and pain. Hope this helps,------------------susanIBS D/C type & M.E/CFS

As always I echo Susan. I have been on it for 9 motnhs - helps with IBS D, anxiety and depression and no sexual side effects.

I LOVE Remeron!!! It works for depression & anxiety (which I have neither). I take 30 mgs of it before bed. It has no sexual side effects & is not addictive. It has helped me leaps & bounds with my IBS D. It blocks the 5ht3 receptor like Lotronex. Paxil doesn't block that receptor.Good Luck, & keep us posted please!
