I have pain under my ribs and breastbone almost everyday. I have IBS-C and I know that that causes that sometimes. Anybody have it, too? Any suggestions as to what it might be and how to make it go away?

It doesnt sound related to constipation. You should be evaulated by your GI because it could be an ulcer.

My gastro did a upper GI, a ultrasound, an endoscopy and a PH monitor test and all came out "fine". No ulcers found, no cancer from biopsies. He said it was heartburn under my ribs, but it's still there.

What I've noticed about pain in my mid-chest area, which feels kind of like I have too much air in my chest...very uncomfortable, is that, within a couple hours, I start passing a lot of gas and have bowel cramps because of it. I think the pain is deferred pain from my intestines that's in my chest. I know it's not heartburn because I also have that and it's not at all the same type of pain!I do not like those chest pains, they scare me because I know it means I've got intestinal pain coming!

I'm still having upper abdominal pain, almost 24 hours a day now, 7 days a week. I have it immediately upon eating and often have attacks of excruciating pain under left rib now with periodic attacks under right rib. I've had every test known to man and still nothing except "duh, I don't know, you've got IBS?" gee thanks doc.

I have that same feeling, and I also suffer from IBS. That feeling I have that sounds similar to yours is caused by a hiattal (i can't spell) hernia. Many medicines that I have taken for IBS have irritated by hernia and the medicines I have taken for my hernia irritate my IBS which is pretty severe. So I quit taking all my medicine because I feel hopeless. You should get that checked out.

Thanks for the replies!!! Wouldn't a hiatal hernia show up in any tests like upper Gi, ultrasound, endoscopy? And, Lorimidwife, my gastro was the one that said it was heartburn and I was like you... "how can that be heartburn? It doesn't feel like it's heartburn", but he said that any burning, whether it's under the ribs or up in the chest, that it's heartburn.Doctors all tell ya something different, tho. Makes me mad becuz after hurting so much for a year now, SOMEBODY outta be able to tell me the right answer!

It sounds like your problem is really noncardiac chest pain...so I wonder about how well the upper GI was done. For example, did you have symptoms during the test? Also, did you have an esophageal motility study done? What you describe sounds like diffuse esophageal spasm.

Relic, I have pain on my right side under my ribs, basically along the ascending colon line, almost constantly. I have been given every test imaginable: I have had a laparoscopy, colonoscopy and gastroscopy AND biopsy, and an lower G.I. series as well as a retrograde for stones, 2 u'/s (one pelvic) and 3 CT scans! So far, all they can say is it is IBS-C and I have been put on miralax. I try gas-x every now and then to see if it worksm, and sometimes it helps. I also try using glycerin suppsoitories, even though I go regularly, I seem to never completely empty. This helps the pain a little.I'm try to get pregnant right now, but when I know I'm not pregnat I will take xanax pretty regularly, and that seems to help. I have tried every external stress reduction I can think of. I am thinking of acupuncture next! Have you tried this?

Did you have an endoscopy? It's better technology than Upper GI Series barium xrays (which missed my ulcer). I had the same pain as you do and it turns out I had a duodenal ulcer and the bacteria H. Pylori, which causes ulcers and gastritis. The endoscopy revealed all of this. If you haven't had one yet, I highly recommend it.Good luck,Stacey

I too have a hiatal hernia. They found it when they did an endoscopy (when they put the camera tube into your stomach). I get the weird heartburny feeling too, but it doesn't have that "acid burn" feeling like heartburn. It feels more "sore", like it's black-n-blue inside. It sometimes makes me feel like I can't breathe properly, and it sometimes gives me heart palpitations.
