Question for Karen, re: Propulcid

Karen,You and I both being the "c" type, I remember reading a while back that you had starting taking Propulcid, and were having good results. I believe you stated it was helping with the "c". Are you still taking it and having good results? The reason I ask is, I have an appointment with my gastro in a few weeks, and I was thinking of asking him for a prescription. I am not taking any prescription meds other than Evista, which is an alternative to estrogen replacement, because of menopause. I am usually very hesitant in taking prescription meds, but if this really helps, I might give it a try. Thanks,Rose

Hi Rose
,with Propulsid, the food in my stomach seemed to "digest" quicker, reduced nausea, gassy-feeling, "fullness" & acid-reflux. I believe it helped my "stomach" problem but not my intestinal cramps...My Gastro-Dr mentioned that propulsid may stimulate the colon as well since it tends to "move things" along quicker in the upper GI tract. After trying it out for 2 weeks, 30% of that time my colon was cramping a bit more than usual so I decided to discontinue it, since I m an IBS-D or sorts...my biggest problem iswith my upper-stomach (pre-ulcer like symptoms I guess & intestinal cramps)...double trouble. It may help you Rose..I think Karen noted that it helped her somewhat, cant recall precisely, might have to check original thread again. I really do miss her...I better email her about the party Sunday!dont forget Rose to alert the others too!
. Good Health to us all!

Hi...I was on propulsid for over a year and a half...I took 1 pill twice a day. The reason it was prescribed for me was because of intense reflux disease. I think it helped with my IBS in the beginning..because of the difference in the digestion speed of my food. However in the long run I really don't feel it made any difference. I have finally weaned myself off of it. I haven't taken it in about a month and a half. I can't eat much of what I like ..namely chocolate..without triggering acid pain. But my bowels are still pretty *C*. Good luck to you though..everything works differently with different people. Try anything that you can get your hands on.

Hi! I'm a fellow type C person. before my colon problems started I was diagnosed with GERD (Gastroesophogeal Reflux Disease). To make a long story short I was absolutely miserable with nausea and acid reflux. I lost a lot of weight and felt tired and weak all the time. The only thing I felt like doing was laying in bed and reading or sleeping. After my diagnosis of GERD the doctor prescribed Propulsid. It is a wonder drug as far as I am concerned. I went on it for 8 weeks (2x/day). Shortly after is when my C problems started. I'm still not sure how it's all related, but the Propulsid generally only helps me with the stomach/GERD problems, not the colon. Sometimes it will give my colon a boost. Now I only take the Propulsid when I really have severe stomach pain...that's very rare. If I eat right I usually feel normal except for C and some bloating.

Hello,Propulcid is for emptying the stomach, that is what I take for the gastroparesis. It helps the stomach contract and push food out of the stomach. It will also give you cramps because it moves the food faster than normal.I found it gives me nausea too, but I still have to take it.There is a good site to see at the John Hopkins center. It tells alot about ibs and motility disorders.http://www.jhbmc.jhu.edu/Motil/schusctr.htmcheck out the whole site. Has a lot of good info.

Hi Rose and Lisa.....I'm back (missed ya guys big time) and thanks for missing me
Rose, Rose, Rose....I am so sorry it's taken me this long to respond, and probably didn't catch you before your Doctor visit
....About the Propulcid, it did work wonders in the motility department for me. I even had a few days of urgency (which was okay with me) and was pretty much going every day. However, my main problem is upper-gut spasms/pain and I think my Gastro was hoping that if he got the constipation under control, the upper-gut would follow. It didn't, and now the doc's have taken me off the Propulcid and have me on Paxil. Haven't crapped in over a week, but believe it or not, I'm feeling better. So, to answer your question, yes it did help the C and it may be worth a try for you. I did notice you're on Evista, don't know if Propulcid interacts with that drug, but I do know that there are many drugs one cannot take while on Propulcid.Did you go to the Doc yet? Please let me know.Take care!Karen
