After an examination at the Hospital last Friday I was diagnosed as having a Rectal Prolape

It was most likely due to the fact that for many years I have suffered with IBS C. I was hoping that someone here could give me more information about Rectal Prolapse. I have been told that I will need to go into Hospital for a procedure to fix it, and it will only involve an overnight stay ( thankfully!) Please, if anyone knows anything about this procedure let me know as I am very worried about it.The Consultant mentioned something about "tying with elastic bands) but I am afraid most of what he said did'nt sink in at the time. I am just waiting now for my Hospital appointment. Can anyone give me more info. Thanks

Hi MogsMum,Found this about rectal prolapse by doing a Google search: http://www.nwcrc.com/rectal-prolapse.htm Hope that can answer some questions for now, I'm sure somebody here can tell you more about it.I know how difficult it can be to take everything in at the dr's, and certainly when they start talking about surgery out of the blue. Fay,I also have a rectal prolapse, though it hasn't been officially diagnosed. There are some posts on the Constipation board about it. I do know that surgery is ultimately the only way to completely solve it, as the ligaments have permanently stretched. and that it usually comes from straining (as with IBS-C).Here are some links on it. Thanks Fay and Caroline for the information.

I had already done a search and found the very same page you did Fay. The pages you found Caroline was very helpful also as it jogged my memory as to what the Doc said, and the term "Mucosal Prolapse" rang a bell...Thanks.What I am more interested in though is finding someone who has had the same problem and I can find out first hand about the treatment etc and the success rate and how long it takes to recover.I mentioned to the Consultant that because of my IBS would the problem re-occur and he said he would most likely have to do the "procedure" every 3 or 4 yrs!! Not something to look forward to is it!

I hope someone reading this has first hand knowledge and can enlighten me. Thanks once again Fay and Caroline.
