Hello-Has anybodys doctor told you that ibs runs in your family? I have had it for ten years and there is a few in my family that has it. My doctor has me on spasm med. and he tells me to eat more fiber. Fiber and stuff like that gives me gas. Does anybody have problems with clumps of mucus? If so what is that about?

Yes, I think I have heard that it runs in families. My father's family seems to be prone to it. My father died of colon/liver cancer, so it is kind of scary for me to have IBS.

Fortunately, from what I've read, IBS doesn't lead to Cancer or any form of damage at all to the digestive tract. IBS is not like IBD, IBD is the one that can lead to cancer later in life. Of course there are other reasons for colon/liver cancer, but it seems that IBS just makes life a little harder but doesn't have any direct negative health effects.

IBD is Inflammatory Bowel Disease, it has two types named Crohn's Disease or ulcerative colitis. You can read about IBD on WebMD. IBD can actually be detected with a colonoscopy from what I understand, where IBS doesn't really show anything.
