I recently finished the Pimental protocol of ten days on rifaximin at 1200mg per day. To my complete dissapoinment, my symptonms not only did NOT improve but have actually been worse. In the book his states that if the symptom reduction is only 60 to 70% he will often put the patient on both rifaximin and neomycin at the same time. I have gotten the prescriptions form my Gi but am wondering if I should try just the neomycin by itself sinse I didn't experience ANY improvement with rifaximin alone. My question to the board is what would you do? Both, to really give it a doulble whammy,or just the neomycin"? I am going to wait until monday to fill the rx so any advise before then would really be appreciated. Thanks a lot.James

jtree,I as understnad the Pimentel recommendation is that neomycin is for constipation predominate and rifaximin is for diareah predominate. Methane producing bacteria lead to constipation and that is what the neomycin treats. Hydrogen producing bacteria produce diareah, hence the use of rifaximin. I am personally going to ask my doc for both.
