I am new to this site and have hit rock bottom. I have been battling chronic ibs for 10 years now and in the past year it has gotten even worse (for no apparent reason). My main symptom is severe wrenching stomach pain/cramps. I have missed more days then I am allowed at work and am being docked pay. Its a battle to get to work every morning without having to stop, and its only 5-10 minutes away. The cramps get so bad that I am on the verge of passing out most of the time. The cramps come on for no apparent reason. It doesn't matter what I eat or if I eat anything for that matter. Stress has little to do with it, since I can just be sitting on the couch relaxing and suddenly be having a bad attack. I have been on every kind of med and have had every kind of test known to man. My symptoms seem to be similar to chrons but they can find it no matter what test they run. My brother in law has chrons and I have much worse symptoms then him. Does anyone have any suggestions? My gi doctor has me on prevacid (acid reflux), lexapro (antianexiety), levbid, donntal, and librax (all antispasams). Nothing seems to work. I am welcome to anything that has helped anyone else with similar debilitating symptom(s). THANKS!

Hi Kev. I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing so much discomfort. I take it you've seen a specialist? I don't really have anything I can suggest as I'm in the same boat. I'm not having attacks as frequently as you, but I've not managed to find anything to help my IBS, and I've tried everything. I'm currently laying in bed recovering from one of the worst attacks ever. I just hope you find some relief. Keep us posted.

The only thing that helps with the pain is an over the counter remedy called EqualActin. Walgreens does not stock it but will order it. My pain is mostly on the left side, so I try to keep that side warm and when I am at work, I sit up as tall as I can as bending forward squeezes the colon causing more pain. This IBS is hell isn't it?

Hello !Hope you all are having a good day..and thanks in advance for reading this.I would greatly appreciate your input on my symptoms. I ahve been having them for 2 months now. ( notihng compared to some of you, I know ) The Dr says he doesn't know what I have , but has suggested it is psychosomatic.( so I am having some sessions with a psychologist to cover that one ) I have been on 4 kinds of anti-biotics since October, but have been taking pro-biotic powder.I have had blood work done: all looks fineI have had an ultra-sound of the pelvis: looks fine.I have had a CT scan : nothing showing as abnormal.I have had a back x-ray: normalThere will be a colonoscopy at some point in the future.Symptoms: lower abdominal pain, radiating right across the bottom of the abdomen ( prettty constant).....gas , bubbling across the abdomen, and reslting in farting ( no real smell), some burping... slight feling of release and then the pain resumes. some lower back painFatigue because I wake up during the night from the discomfort..and fearThere is no diarreaha, and very little constipation.I am about to have some teeth extracted.......could fear be doing all of this ????I am 65, on no meds, pay attention to my diet adn walk for exercise.Lots of stres in caring for 2 aged Parents, but some good stuff too in life.Except now I am getting more and more obsessed with this pain.It is taking over.Does this sound like IBS ????I would appreciate your input. All the best,Marena( Ottawa, Canada)

Marena Welcome Not sure why you were on the 4 different antibiotics but I would have a stool analysis/culture done to rule out any teeny nasties. The antibiotcs could have messed up your gut bacterial balance and yes a probiotic would help restore that. But sometimes one needs to try a few different probitoics to find the right one for them in particular. Also they can take some time to restore a good balance. I do not know how long you have been on a probiotic so you might just need more time with it or to try a completely different one..?? I don't know.Otherwise...
Does this sound like IBS ????
Yes it does sound very familiar.

Hi there, I am also a new member and read about your problems. I have the same problems, stomach cramps and spasms which come on all of a sudden. I am on quite a few medications and a colonoscopy and endoscopy and laparascopy done all revealed motility disorders - problems in the way the colon expands and contracts. I have very few good days, many bad ones and the last three or four months have been very bad. I am currently going thru a very anxious and depressive state when I allow myself to think about it. My doctors say it is intractable IBS and I am keeping a journal of what I eat, when I eat and when the spasms start and what possibly triggers them off. A few things that help and which you may use are: (1) A walk....sometimes the spasms strike while I am walking, I sit and wait for the spasm to pass and then resume walking. As brisk as you can manage without inducing pain. The walk helps me feel positive during the day and keeps the blues away. (2) Meditation - try to meditate and keep your mind blank and push all depressive thoughts away. My husband and I have joined this spiritual way, called Sahaj Marg. I think this has helped me a lot as we are exposed to how to keep suffering and pain in perspective. I know to some people it sounds hokey pokey, but it really helps. This is not to say that I am managing perfectly...I am on daily medications, and I feel scared going out - what if the pain strikes when I am out? I kind of looorward to the night when I can escape into oblivion and I am awarer that this is the first sign of depression. try the walk. hang in there and let me know if it helps.
