Stoool softeners can have laxatives in them. Just be sure to buy the plain stool softener. the only ingredient should be ducosate sodium. It could take a day to start working. If after 24 hours 1 doesn't work, try taking 2 a day. I don't think this would be harmful, but you may want to double check with your gastro before uppihng I don't think it's off the wall to get worked up over going to the bathroom of you have issues with it. Finding a routine that works for you will lessen the anxiety considerably, and I'm personally still working hard to find one for myself that doesn't include laxatives. It's very difficult and I'm starting to think that I won't achieve my "ideal" situation. Sometimes I'm not going to go or be uncomfortable. the important thing is to try and live my life anyway. It's been hard to do that since coming off using sorbitol for almost 2 years and going every day, sometimes 2x a day, with no feeling of incomplete evacuation. that't the toughest sensation to have to deal with (for me). However, the sorbitol gave me pretty bad pain periodically, so it had to go.Dana

Hae you tried uppositories or mineral oil enemas to soften the stools , I had the exact problem you mention , the only treatment that worked were weekly Fleet Mineral Oil enemas ,I had mega-colon, diverticulitis, impacted colon at age 14 from holding my BMS in for 2-3 extra days ,and by then my BMS WERE SO COMPACTED AND LARGE IT WAS LKE TRYING TO SQUEEZE OUT A BASEBALL BAT OF MY RECTUM !!Enemas were the only way I could go potty from age 14-19 when my IBS was at its worst.Even though I had to get the enemas from my mom (the doc said it was dangerous for me to try to reach back and insert my self ,which if done at the wrong angle can puncture the walls of the colon ), the embarrassment from the enema was a smal price to pay for the relief I felt . I got my problem from not being able to go potty in public also ,all my childhood my mom had made me think my bowelhabits were shameful and abnormal so I got a complex about going potty .I waited until every body in the house was asleep or gone before I could go potty . /
