two new articles on stress, anxiety and ibs suggest (to me at least) that they are starting to figure out how stress and serotonin fit into the ibs picture: Blomhoff S, Spetalen S, Jacobsen MB, Malt UF. Phobic anxiety changes the function of brain-gut axis in irritable bowel syndrome.Psychosom Med. 2001 Nov-Dec;63(6):959-65.andDig Dis 2001;19(3):201-11 Role of Stress in Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders. evidence for stress-induced alterations in gastrointestinal motility and sensitivity.Monnikes H, Tebbe JJ, Hildebrandt M, Arck P, Osmanoglou E, Rose M, Klapp B, Wiedenmann B, Heymann-Monnikes I.the second article suggets that IBS patients might not produce enough serotonin at the 5HT3 receptor in the colon without help from something like lotronex to help them deal with stress - I am not really qualified to make this statement - this is just a lay interpretation of the abstract.tom
