Have to go to NYC for four days! Not only a flight, lots of eating in public, a two-hour car ride to a remote office, and more eating in public. UGH!!!!! Suggestions??????

Kimz,Don't know what type IBS-er you are, but if you're type D, you can try adding SOLUBLE fiber to your diet - Metamucil, Citracel or Fibercon. They solidify in your system which should help prevent problems. Also, when you eat, try to eat some french bread or white bread FIRST before eating anything else. That should help - along with avoiding the trigger foods of raw fruits & veges, caffeine & high fat foods.

I live in NYC, so I know how dreaded the city trip can be..."What do you mean the restroom is for customers only?!"I agree with Immodium suggestion. I also find munching saltines keeps me from eating too much at restaurants (which can definitely be dangerous).Best of luck!

One word of caution about fiber. Don't use it for the first time in a new situation. Some people get more and looser stools with this....I did. Save the metamucil, fibercon trial for a situation that is entirely "safe" for 2-3 days. I agree with Imodium.

KIM..I agree with joejoe. Don't try any fiber in a new situation. It could make it worse. Eat really light. Bread, crackers, water. And if things go bad just say you're under the weather. good luck -john

Sorry, Up and Down -- I think you're really a smart cookie. But I too have to go along with Joe-Joe and not do the fiber first time on a trip. First time I took the smallest teaspoon of Citrucel, I was runnin' like a rabbit the whole day (and this was at a festival!). And trying Fibercon, another time, I was bloated like a Macy's Christmas parade balloon by nightfall -- so much so that I couldn't stand up straight!

Hi- good luck! Immodium is a good idea. Maybe Gas-X ( I am a big fan of simethicone)Stick with only bland, "safe" foods-crackers,low fat, avoid raw food etc. Focus on deep breathing during the trip there and stay relaxed. But what do I know?- I am too freaked out to travel again yet because of IBS, and Panic, as well. Good for you!

hi I can relate with you only my situation was that my friend who is a PSYCHOLOGIST cam to visit me here in Istanbul and I wass to go to London with her as a girls trip away from our hubbys and I had never been and she went to school as an exchange student and wanted to go and show me everything blah blah blah. I was sooooooooooooo crazed about the fact that I was going to have to travel but what I did not know was that there was only the tube (WiTH NO RESTROOMS!!!!!!!!!) I was not hiding the prob from my friend but because she is in the h care proff I was not ready to let her know that I had anzxieties that were now becoming panic attacks. WE were on th tube from the airport and when I asked her where the restrooms were she looked in amazement and told me that theere weren,t any on the tubes. I began to break out right there in a cold sweat and was praying that I could make it! long story short...... do not worry1) every morning take a lomitil which is stronger than Immodium. You wo,t have a bowel movement for days but you will be sure not to have a prob at all.2) take a stomach gas reliever or an antispasmadic they are great. I take librax it is very quick wehen you feel the gas bubbling up and that alone just give me that anxiety.3) eat in front of your constituents as less as possible and when back at the hotel. try eating meat that always soaks up the acids in my stomach or just what ever you can take without being sick.3) do not try to rely on new stuff. the thought of if it is going to work will make me panic.4) take immodium or lomitil a gooooood hour before leaving your room!!!! you will be fine. I was and I was a realllll wreck back then. now my friend tells that she has IBS too and she just deals and takes pills to correct the prob at hand and goes on about her business. This is what I started think and it is a sttrong way to live your life. just take your D pills every day do not chance. when you are at home give your body a rest then and try the calcium LNAPE talks of . It helped me 95% but in stressfull situations I help myself!!!!!!! WTH WHAT EVER MED NEED.eNJOY AND do what is necessary for a problem free trip.

I agree with the others...DO NOT try fiber for the first time on a trip....ohhhh noooo!! Take immodium with you on the plane in a carry on. Try to relax about the trip - the absolute worst thing that can happen is that you have to excuse yourself - explain that you are sick and go back to the hotel room. The "bigger" you make the event, the more stress you will feel and we all know what stress does to IBS!! Good luck!!

I was in a bit of a hurry yesterday so I didn't fully explain what I meant. I should have said that if Kimz has time PRIOR to the business trip Kimz should try fiber - it helps many people and it's more preventive so it would make him or her feel more secure. If the business trip is say, tomorrow, I would of course second and third everyone's suggestions of Immodium.Sorry for the misunderstanding - I definitely would NOT recommend trying fiber for the first time on a business trip - it takes some time to figure out the right amount & type to take.-UPandDOWN
