hello, i have been reading these forums for a year or two, and i would like to thank to all of you who contribute. i just registered today, however. Question: Has anybody used Xiao Yao Wan to treat their IBS, and if so, what were the results? Xiao Yao Wan helps my symptoms tremendously but causes me some side effects - primarily insomnia and sometimes constipation. My goal is to find a a way to minimize Xiao Yao's side effects while maximizing its benefits. Thanks,Brooks

http://www.activeherb.com/xiaoyao/ has some info on it. It doesn't sound like it is specifically for diarrhea. You might need to go to a Chinese herbalist. Sometimes they will take a standard formulation like this and adjust it based on your specific symptoms. Like most of these things it is a combination of herbs and sometimes you don't need all of them, or how your system is may need one of the effects balanced out with something else. A trained TCM herbalist can make an individulized formula that may work better for you than the standardized formulation.Unfortunately it is a complicated system and deals a lot with several things required to bring the body back into balance.

Some sources say that Xiao Yao is used to treat IBS with alternating constipation and diarrhea. As Kathleen said, I'm sure it's best to see a Traditional Chinese Medicine specialist. I think that's part of my problem. I'm seeing a TCM practitioner who seems to specialize more in acupuncture and not so much in Chinese herbs. Thus, he prescribes me standard formulas like Xiao Yao Wan that may not be ideal for me because the xiao yao formula helps in some respects but has unwanted effects in others. i'm in the process of finding another practitioner, but i live in a smaller town where there are only two pracitioners. I may try a telephone or email consult. i've seen them advertised on the internet. Has anybody had any luck with this approach?
