About 5 years ago I made the link between vegetable oils and diarrhoea, since when I've found eating out rather demanding. These oils are so common, they're virtually impossible to avoid altogether and so I'm caught about twice a month. For instance, raisins/sultanas/currants are coated with sunflower oil so they don't stick together. Olive oil is fine so long as cold pressed. Coconut oil, ghee, dairy & animal fats are all fine. I've kept a detailed log all this time and have a high degree of certainty. It's not full-blown diarrhoea most of the time, but is urgent and is followed by constipation for a day or so until back to normal. Always read the ingredients list. Thought I was unique until finding this site, thanks.

IBS can really be tricky huh? Spicy foods are a common trigger but I am okay with them - so far. Like with fats too. Seem you're not okay with vegetable fats. How long did it take you before you were successful in the elimination process?

I did an elimination diet about 5 years ago, down to meat and vegetables, but nothing alerted me to preparing those with oil. The penny dropped after about 12 months and I had to start again. It took at least another couple of years to reintroduce all the food types which initially upset my system and then I was left with oils. Specialists were completely puzzled why I have no problem with animal fats and dairy but cannot handle vegetable oils, but eventually I found that veggie fats are extracted with a solvent, hexane, which is distilled from crude oil. Only about 6 months ago did I solve the mystery of olive oil, which sometimes upset me and other times did not; chatting with an olive oil producer, he advised that large producers use the husks from the first (cold) pressing and add, yes, hexane. The resulting product can be sold, over here in Australia at least, as "pure olive oil". In recent months two doctors of the younger type have each said that vegetable oils are unfit for human consumption, and also they convert in cooking to trans fats. Yet they are in so many foods, which is probably why I haven't been able successfully to eliminate them for a good long period before a reintroduction. But do I want to anyway? I suspect this may be one reason there are so many people with unresolved IBS. Give it a try, maybe?
