Low vit. D3 levels can cause many illnesses, not just IBS or IBD, to be worse. There is more and more research being done on the subject and overall researchers are seeing that people's vit. D3 levels, especially in the winter, are very low. Vit. D3 is a particular vitamin that we absorb through our skin from the sun, but you can get it in supplement form as well. In the winter I take high doses of Vit. D3 under a physicians supervision with routine blood tests to make sure the levels aren't getting too high, as that could cause kidney stones. But, in the summer months 20-30 minutes of time spent in the sunshine with as much skin bare will give you the amount of Vit. D3 that you need. Keep in mind that sunscreen blocks the absorption of Vit. D3 so those 20 mins. of sun should be without sunscreen.
