My mother just suggested maybe the empty stomach and the cinnamon altoid I had did me in, because when you don't eat the acid in your tummy goes wild?? Other than that I just had water all afternoon (breakfast was an egg and a bagel).

This is a normal occurrence with IBS. It is the result of a heightened gastrocolic reflex. The water itself is not the cause.

AlmostFamous here is advice from Heather Van Vorous' site (Author of "Eating for IBS" and "The First Year: IBS") ..."Avoid ice-cold foods and drinks on an empty stomach. Cold makes muscles contract, and your goal is to keep your stomach and the rest of your GI tract as calm as possible." ../diet/how_to_eat.asp RE: Fluoride ... Many countries have terminated adding it to drinking water due to its potential health including Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, Germany and Sweden. The area you live in may not fluoridate it's water so this may not be a problem, but worth considering if avoiding fluoride eliminates some of your symptoms.Flux will post some other rubbish image in response to this post ... he won't be able to find any article or research that proves fluoride is safe ... it's basically a form of intimidation and insulting where the insulter is not intelligent enough to actually debate the issue in his own words. But I'm sure you've come across enough of his posts to realise that when Flux posts "bullsh*t" it doesn't mean there isn't any truth to the claims of the members. As he says, he is not a doctor so he does not know if the water itself is not the cause. Also for the record I haven't tried avoiding fluoride. I just thought it might be worth considering. Australia still fluoridates it's water supply.

AlmostFamous I'm not suggesting you stop drinking water - IBS sufferers should try and drink as much water as possible. Distilled water is much healthier for the body, particularly water that has undergone Cold Molecular Distillation. C.M.D water is available from companies specialising in this area and supply water for medical purposes, allergy affected chemical sensitive people, cancer and dialysis patients (were even small traces of contaminants can send the patient into shock) and generally to any one who is seeking good health. C.M.D water contains no solid matter and is solely consisting of two elements, Hydrogen and Oxygen.

No the gastrocolic thing has nothing to do with acid. It is that the stomach reacts to stuff going into it and then it tells the colon about it.Some people seem to have more problems if they let themselves get really hungry before eating again. So this could be the same thing...anything you expanded the stomach with could have been a problem.I've always had problems drinking water (more so than juice or other liquids) on an empty stomach in the morning, but usually that is a "I drink water, and toss it right back up" thing rather than IBS symptoms. A couple of bites of food seemes to blunt that. It may be just how water fills an empty stomach vs how water gets mixed with food that is in there.K.
