Hello all my name is Renee and I am new as of today. As my user name indicates I am trying to stay positive. Its not always easy is it? I know today I am having a very hard time. I sufer predominately with the C aspect of the IBS.I was thrilled to find a support group like this out there. I too share some of your thoughts about Docters just wanting to find a bandaid for it.Here are some of the things I find work well for me. I know you have probably heard it all before but if it helps someone thats all that matters to me.Digestive enzymes: I have no idea what I would do with out my enzymes they save me from a lot of pain!WATER: I drink at least a half gallon of water a day. If I don't I pay for it!FOS: Another supplement I can't live withoutMetamucil: Even though it causes gas I don't go with out it.It is so great to be able to come here and see I am not "alone" in this whole IBS thing. You all really understand what it is like to suffer with this. My spouse is very supportive and so are my friends but you all really "get it" You know what its like to leave with this ####. Or lack of ha ha.I am very excited to learn of this magnesium. I am going to the store right after work to try it with my supper. I am nervous about taking it due to the nausea it causes some people but I need to do something different today. I am going on 3 weeks with a very bad flare up. I was extremely depressed when I found this today. Thanks to you all I feel like I have some hope again.God bless us all and I will keep you in my prayers and thoughts.

t2sp (is that okay to shorten your username like that?) - Welcome to the BB! Not that I wish IBS on anyone, but it's good to see more people finding this board. I know it's been a tremendous help for me over the past three years.Sounds like you have a similar 'regime' that I have. I can't take metamucil, but lots and lots of water for me too! What is FOS?I'm a huge supporter of magnesium and sure hope it works for you. If you have any questions, let me know. I have my email in the profile.Ty------------------There is nothing so strong as gentleness, and there is nothing more gentle as real strength.
You might want to try Citrucel instead of Metamucil - I've heard from people on this board that citrucel doesn't cause gas like metamucil does. I've always used it because my doctor years ago told me it tasted better - it's much smoother. I now use their new pills since they're easier to take. nancy
Welcome to the board tryin2staypositive!!!I'm C also and this board is the best, very helpful people here, I'm so happy to have found this site. I, like you, found it when I was having a very bad attack. You found the right place. You'll love it. I just started magnesium 6 days ago and it has made a huge difference. I take metamucil everyday, drink plenty of water, lots a fruits and vegetables. I thought that magnesium would have made me naucious because i have a sensitive stomach but it hasn't. I take 420 mg of mag. oxide with my supper ivery night and so far so good. I'm not trying to gross you out but my stools have been less difficult to pass without the feeling of still having more inside of me. I'm less gassy now and my tummy is flat! I sometines looked like I may be pregnant and I'm a skinny person. I can't wait every day to take my mag. pill. I really hope that magnesium will do the trick for you. I don't know if you're in Canada but Citrucel is not available here. Happy you found us.

I also find metamucil and isphagula make me more bloated. Non bloating fibres (or non-fermentable fibres) are methylcellulose (Citrucul) and sterculia (I am in Australia so I don't know if you can get that in the USA) or Fibercon(polycarbophil). Citrucel is my favourite, as apparently it can absorb smelly gas, which is a very handy thing indeed! Unfortunately I can't buy Citrucel (or equivalent) in Australia and it is very expensive to have it sent out from the USA. I now use the sterculia, which is an acceptable substitute.I also recommend magnesium, which can also help with pain and PMS symptoms (if you get them!) It can take a little while to get the dose right, but it is worth it. I prefer taking it at night. I never had any nausea with it.Good luck

Hi all,THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR RESPONSES!It is such a feeling of hope to know I am not alone anymore in all this.I have been out of work for 4 days! My boss is very unhappy with me! He doesn't know it yet but I am looking for another job. This one has toooo much stress for my tummy to handle.I think I need to cut back a little on the ole fiber it may be making it worse. I also know I have to step up the water intake. I am not seeing any results yet with the magnesium but am not giving up yet!Do any of you notice any difference in taking a pill form of fiber versus the powder? I hate taking metamucil or citracel but I gag it down every morning or its big trouble for me. The gas drives me nuts though! ARGHHHHHHHHFOS is a supplement I take that helps the good bacteria in my tummy. I think it helps a lot! Thanks again everyone. I am so happy I found you all!Renee
