Hello everyone. I do not post much but lurk often, especially when my symptoms are very bad, makes me feel better to know I'm not alone.
I have the type of IBS where I never have diarrhea, and am somewhat constipated, although I do usually go once a day. The biggest problem is the pain. I have pain in my stomach, exactly like cramping but without the diarrhea. NOTHING has helped more than to barely take the edge off the pain.
I have tried NuLev, Librax (pretty useless), and Bentyl. Bentyl is the only thing that takes the edge off of it but my intestines still manage to cramp even if I've taken four within a five hour time frame!!Does anyone have any other ideas for pain meds? Something other than what I've taken that the doc would actually write me a script for (certainly not Vicodin!!) Please let me know!
Thank you!Lori

Do you know your suppose to be going 2 to 3 times a day! 3 meals in, three meals out! Don't take drugs!! It only puts more toxins in your system and makes you even more plugged up.Please check out my web site in my profile. The whole idea is to help balance you system again. By helping with regularity, digestion, has enzymes, Probiotics, Antioxidants, helps your immune system, and so much more. Eight great products , and two of them for personal care. You also have to find a good balance diet that agrees with you, and exercise. Cut out the fatty stuff, dairy, processed foods. That old saying "stick to your ribs". We want food to flow through easier, and when it doesn't, that where the pain comes in. Parasites might even be a factor. Educated yourselves..stop taking drugs to relieve the pain temp. get to the source of the problem!Suki

A normal bm is once every three days to three times a day. Less than or more than that is not normal. A low dose antidepressant might be the best option for you to try next (like the paxil).

If your going once every three days your colon and intestines are toxic. You ask any Naturopath,or Homeopath. If you ask a med. Doctor he or she would likey give you drugs.Suki

Thank you for some of your responses! I have been to a naturpath whom, after me spending about $500, didn't help at all. The pills he had me buy hurt my stomach more, they were neurotransmitter supplements. I quit going to him because I got the feeling he didn't know what else to do to help me and he was right.
Have also tried most of the dietary supplements such as enzymes, probiotics, and antioxidants. Have modified my diet, have spent $2000 on acupuncture (which I still continue to do) and just recently purchased and have been listening to "Mike's tapes".Nothing I have done has helped...nothing. I have pretty much given up trying all these alternative methods to feel better, none of them work. Which was why I was wondering what other kinds of pain relief meds were out there. If I'm to live with this for God knows how long, I need something that works for my pain so I can do my job.
Any other ideas?Thank you!Lori

"If your going once every three days your colon and intestines are toxic."You really need to back up this statement. Nothing I have ever read has ever said anything like this.

Like Lorimidwife I have spent a fortune trying everything out there starting with colon cleansers and bacteria killer offers and enzymes, Probiotics, Antioxidants; none of it really helps.Diet and excercise are good but I have no idea if these other things help or not. They sure didn't me. I don't have the pain, just gas and odor, but if I could get a prescription drug that would help with pain I would take it.Good luck Joyce

I'm going to give a quote from the Awareness Health flyer that I have."It is a known fact that North American herbal knowledge consists of about 300 herbs. In comparison, herbal knowledge in the Mediterranean is of more then 10,000 herbs. It is this extensive Mediterranean knowledge that pinpointed the herbs necessary for proper, healthy cleansing."You see, alot of so-called Natural Health companies are in it for the money, and don't really take note of the combonations of herbs that are put into their products. Some combo's can be harmful and even deadly, because like it says ,there's only about 300 herbs to work from. The Awareness Products recipes are put together by a Master Herbalist in the Mediterranean and are balanced precisely for all body types to assure maxinum benefits.Suki

Lorimidwife:My symptoms are very similar to yours but my pain moves from my rectum and radiates up through my back most of the time. I have also run the gamut on various drugs. My docs finally settled on a combination that has given me some relief. For the last 3 months I have been taking Hyoscyamine (Levsin) and a very low dose of an antidepressant (Pamelor) that was prescribed "off label". Off label means that it was not prescribed for depression but for pain instead. It took about 4-6 weeks of going up and down until it finally settled into a regular pattern. My pain has dissipated significantly but has not gone away completely. At least I can live with it for now.Good luck and don't give up. There are many things the docs can try - together you just have to find the right combinations of the right drugs and appropriate lifestyle changes. It can be done!Roger

differences of opinion indeed! what i have found to work best is a balance between medical and traditional.like a doctor, a good naturopath can be hard to find. and like both, you have to go "educated" going in. at the end of the day, they are BOTH selling pills. there is an industry behind both, and that is important to keep in mind.that said, i am visiting a great naturopath once a month.. i am also confident in her because she recommended a place for me to buy the pills that provided a student discount, and she doesn't sell pills herself. i can't tell you how many naturopaths have told me, for instance, that i am allergic to gluten. i love being able to say now that i have been tested, i had the g-scope, i am not allergic to gluten.anyway, i have been a very healthy and active vegetarian my whole life. nevertheless, i have IBS and the pain is tremendous and disabling. that is why i suggested the paxil, it has really saved me. i believe i can fix constipation through diet, but not pain. the pain was often present even if i had a bm, visceral hypersensitivity, etc.a side note (re: side effects & paxil), i guess we all tolerate things differently, but after 2 weeks my side-effects were gone. i am exercising every day, and i think that's where i would have really felt the fatigue if anytime.i started paxil ### 20mg/day in the early evening. zelnorm didn't help at all for the pain, but did ease constipationgood luck!-meg

one more thing!i have just started taking 4 supplements prescribed by my naturopath.. they are M6, mastica, cortrex, scorbatate. BUT, this recommendation was made with regards to my specific history (of ulcer + long term use of prevacid, etc.). so essentially, i think this information is useless to anyone else. i've decided it's worth a shot for me. and the paxil (because it effects serotonin), won't interfere with their workings.. so i think i will be able to judge their efficiancies fairly (whereas in the past i was taking other drugs while trying alternative routes).-meg

O.K. LouLou, if you don't want the free video tape?...I can give you the scoop on the whole regularity thing, and I'm going to quote from the Health video."The number of times you eliminate should equal the number of meals you eat each day. Dr. Bernard Jensen, a well respected digestive system specialist states,"if you eat two to three meals each day, you should eliminate two to three times per day." Nutritionist Lindsey Duncanagrees. "Over 90% of the people I see are metabolizing less than 55% of what they are eating. She also states" I often startle my clients with the question, 'If we eat three meals daily but only eliminate once a day or once every other day, where do you think all the rest of the food is hiding?"Like a backed up sink or toilet in your home, excess waste collects and putrefies in the colon. When this back up occurs, it affects the entire system and toxins begin to recirculate throughout the body. This can result in low metabolism, low energy, water retention, cellulite, overeating, as well as weight gain. Other symptoms include lower energy levels, headaches, food cravings, insomnia, anxiety, joint pain, back pain, allergies, memory lapses, acne, high blood pressure, cholesterol problems, thyroid problems and even PMS symptoms. Heartburn, acid reflux and indigestion are also common symptoms of toxic colon.O.k I'm talking now
This is all from auto-indoxication...self poisioning, poor digestion. Our systems should be 80% alkiline and 20% acid. In most cases it is the other way around. That would be the reason why people have gas, bloating, pain etc. Well I hope this hepls...I'm not the enemy here, I'm on your side. It's important that I get this message out, because it can help alot of people. Suki

You're quoting people who are trying to sell a product. One shouldn't be eating enough in one sitting that it would fill their colon! The colon was made to be a storage unit. That is the colon's job.Taken from this link: http://www.dialadietitian.org/resources/ha...stip.html#bowel Is it necessary to have a bowel movement every day?It is a myth that everyone must have a daily bowel movement. For some people, it is "normal" to have three bowel movements per day. For others, three bowel movements per week is considered normal. And another link: http://kidshealth.org/kid/stay_healthy/body/bowel.html What's Normal? Many people think that "normal" means having one bowel movement every day, but that's not true. People are different, so their bowels are different. "Normal" can mean anything from three bowel movements a day to three a week. So, if your regular schedule fits somewhere in that range, then you're probably OK.From the book, Irritable Bowel Syndrome & The Mind-Body/Brain-Gut Connectionby William B. Salt II, MDThe normal bowel pattern for people in the United States ranges from three bowel movements per day to three per week. The normal amount of stool passed in a 24-hour period would not quite fill an 8-ounce glass.

thanks for the info. loulou.i'm sure all of us feel more comfortable when we have a bm, but that is because our GI tracts are not "normal". healthy people don't have continuous intestinal spasms, visceral hypersensitivity, so "storing" it, isn't a problem.my boyfriend goes twice a day, my sister goes less, and neither of them are in pain. i don't think frequency is the problem as when i was on zelnorm, i was going every morning more or less (for a while at least), but by noon i was in pain again and i hadn't eaten anything since..-meg

Today I saw my acupuncturist who agreed that it's not necessarily normal to have three BMs a day. I also liked how one of you said that some people (such as my husband) can have frequent BMs but yet, no pain. My husband can even have a few bouts of diarrhea with nary a cramp!!
Amazing! So,something about my intestines makes them hurt when they digest food, I don't know what that is.Nothing personal to the person who is pushing the herbal/naturopathic remedies, but I have tried a lot of that and have, frankly, given up on it. Hasn't helped me at all.I remain on the look-out for just one drug that would PLEASE relieve me of this diarrhea-less cramping!!
Why is that so hard for docs to come up with!!!
Lori, sick and tired of all this pain!!!

No Loulou ,these are Doctors that were introduced to the products, and been having amazing results with their patients! I want to thank you for these web sites though, because I'm going to check into it.Don't be surprised if their no longer there...do to miss information. Sure the Colon is tough..once overloaded, waste can expand the colon as much as five times its normal size. People can have anywhere from 7 to 75 pounds of waste in their large intestine at any time.Suki

O.K. here is something I found and it's not about pushing products, as you say. It's an Article in the "Natural Health" magazine, and it is going to be most helpful in answering all your questions. http://www.findarticles.com Go to search bring up Health/fitness magazine then type in "The bowl truth". To go back to what you said Loulou ...about the colon is for storage, that is it's job...question is how long do you want that toxic waste to stay in your system.Suki

Suki1 is right. Back on the 9th you said that you need to detoxify your colon. DAILY. Most people don't believe that you should go 3 times a day. I couldn't. I know that everyone has tried everything, I know I have. I had a baby 10 months ago and my bowels got bad again. I had gained a bit of weight and tried herbalife to loose it. I was talking to a lady who was on it and she swore it had helped with her IBS so I figured if I lost a bit of weight and it helped with IBS why not give it a shot. 6 months and I feel amazing. The Florafibre has acidophilus in it and as the herbal aloe and the vitamins work together to cleans regularly. Our foods just don't have what they should in them now adays. I can't stress how I understand and how this has worked for me. www.innerhealth4yourself.comcheck out the website.
