My physician friend is researching it for me (Zelmac) -- don't know when it is due out. Also researching side effects. But I've been wondering...why can't men take lotronex? or zelmac? what makes it just a woman's drug?
Matt -- I have severe IBS C and I'm a guy. I will definitely try it. I was selected for one of the clinical trials of Zelmac at Baylor two years ago, but had to drop out due to an episode of eschemic colitis triggered (possibly) by one of the liquid glycerine rectal laxatives. I wish I had been able to follow through, but there was enough damage to my upper descending colon (confirmed by colonoscopy) from the ischemia that I was dropped from the study. I don't think Zelmac is just for women. There were other men in the study. I think Zelmac is being targeted at women because 70-80% of the people who suffer from chronic idiopathic constipation and/or colon inertia are women. I hope the professionals don't forget that 20-30% of the people who have to deal with this are men.
I haven't heard Zelmac was only for females. I'm an IBS-C male and intend to try Zelmac when it's out (hopefully later this year).
