I have suffered from IBS for over 5 years. After being told 1000 times that all I need to do is eat more fibre, I found a doctor who prescribed Zelnorm to me because I told him to. It worked the first day I took it and then it didn't work for a couple of weeks and then I started eating even more fibre and gave myself bad gas and stomache pains and it was still not really working. I do not see significant results and my bowel movements are still very irregular and I sometimes go weeks without a good movement. I read about taking a break from Zelnorm because you can become immune to it and I did this, but I still did not see any changes and I still get bloating and abdominal pain and gas all of the time.I dont think that I have been properly diagnosed. I'm 25 years old. I'm going to get referred to a specialist. Some of the symptoms for IBS are very similar to those of colon cancer. My friend's mom was told for years that she had IBS. She died of cancer 2 years ago. I dont mean to scare any of you but I think that with problems in the bowels, you should be checked out for everything. Can you tell me how you were diagnosed with IBS?

They have run my wife through every test in the book, finally got to an excellent GI doc, he said IBS-C, which we has self diagnosised 6 months before.Zelnorm is not working for her. Only enemas for the past 6 months. The fiber thing is a joke, especially if you have a spasmatic colon, which she does.

Thank you gordonandjean. How often does your wife get an enema? Does she do them herself at home? What is the mixture? It's very sad that there is nothing to fix this problem. How does she feel now that she has been doing enemas?I have an appointment at a GI Clinic in Toronto on April 6th. It's called the Rudd Clinic and they have a very good reputation. I will post about how it went. Thanks again.

I have been taking Zelnorm for a year and I notice that when i take it, it causes me to have worse cramps and bloating than beofre I take it. It has come to the point where i am having to take 2 pills just to have it work in my system. I am going back to the doctor in a few weeks and hope to find an alternative . I dont like the fiber diet because it didnt work for me either

Hi!I have been taking Zelnorm for 2 weeks. It worked the first day, and now I am back to where I started from. I was wondering the same thing. I am only taking the 1 pill in the am. Are you taking 2 doses? My dr. said to take it twice a day if I don't feel better with 1, but that is what I am trying to avoid! Sherry

Tara, just a thought but it might be worth some investigation. although I've had IBS my entire life, (I was born with it), could it be possible that you are suffering from adhesions? I have had to have one surgery already to release my colon from my abdominal wall because it had grown there in a mass of adhesions. When the doc went in, he said it's like jungle. Adhesion growth everywhere. My symptoms were/are very similar to yours. Fiber is not going to work!! When they tried that with me, it just balled up in my near-paralyzed colon and rotted. You can imagine how lovely that was. If you've had any abdominal surgeries or infections, that may be your problem. I am not a doctor, of course, (although I have been known to write about them on occasion), so don't take anything I say as a gospel diagnosis. Just something to think about. By the way, my doctor also told me that Zelnorm won't work in adhesion cases.
