Zelnorm question

Hello,I'm new here and I'm so glad I found you all! My doctor recently prescribed Zelnorm and I only take it when I have crampy gas pains or have C - which ends up being about 3 or 4 times a week. Within an hour of taking it, pain and C are gone. It works just like a laxative which gets me thinking. I have heard that if you take a laxative too often, your bowels become lazy and you have to depend on the laxative to have BMs. Shoud I start worrying that this may happen with Zelnorm? Thanks,Nancy

I was wondering the same thing. I have been taking zelnorm for about 5 weeks now and my C and bloating are gone, but I still get D about an hour after I take my zelnorm. If I don't take it I don't go at all. So it is D or nothing. Also my doctor said after 3 months on zelnorm I will have to wean myself off it. Kind of sounds like a laxtive to me. But if it safe to use I would be happy to take it for ever because I feel great when I am using it.
this is a very new drug with a lot of unknowns. It's not clear that it's meant as a laxative but I've seen references that suggest it might 'normalize' bowel function and can then be stopped in some cases? tom
